    Local developer Bob Congel has plans to build a MULTI-BILLION (Thats billion with a B!)mega mall in Syracuse, NY. His plans include more than doubling the size of the current Carosel Mall. It could rival or even exceede the Mall of America. There will be seveal entertaiment opitions. I have a link for some basic info on DESTINY USA
    Mr. Congel has said he will hire 200 new employees at $60,000 (sixty-thousand $) per year. There is no job decription. They will be expected to do a variety of jobs. A high school education was not a reqiuremnt. As of last week, the first 60 have been put on the payroll.

    I don't know Syracuse, but Elmira & some others up there are fairly depressed, with jobs hard to come by. Megamalls have some upsides - they will attract (or had better attract) business to the area and business means jobs. The downside is that they can wreck local businesses and, especially, devastate other, smaller malls - if you have any - and they totally erase local character.

    Any tax benefits should be closely tied to job creation and continuation (not just temporary construction jobs). It probably cannot be stipulated that good jobs go to the locals. Are the politicians in charge of zoning owners of land where the proposed mall is to be? Do they own shares in the corporations?

    Megamalls generally do not belong in a city, but putting one in a depressed suburban area could benefit the people there. It's not cut and dried.

    I'd like to visit Salty, but it would be unseemly not to include Mrs. Salty if she is at all amenable.

    I love to shop. I'd go if I was in the area, but probably would not travel just to go there.

    I'd like to See Mr. and Mrs. Salty, but how did you get salty in New York??

    Heheh!

    Living in the OC, I can attest to the positive impact that the retail sector has on the economy.

    The only thing that concerns me is the 200 new employees at $60K per year, with no job description and no educational or experience requirements. That whole thing sounds a bit suspect. (it shouldbe noted that individual shops will hire their own staff at the going rate, probably just above minimum wage and up).

    As far as visiting, I typically don't put malls on my tourism list, though I'm an avid people watcher, and malls are a great place to people watch.
