Can you show some proof of that?

Well all I can say is that this gossip was in at least one of his books--I do not recall which one, but his story was that he was going to teach a lesson at a seminary and he was very nervous and he kept praying and he felt a warm inner peace, etc etc [which is like Wesleys "I felt my heart strangely warmed"]--his opinion was he was already saved and then received the Holy Spirit....

Also, I'm not sure what he was teaching in Acts 19, but that is "the" chapter people will reference who want to say there is a second work of grace.....now if we read verses 1-6, we realize they didn't know who the Holy Ghost or who Jesus was, so my question would be, could they really be saved? I think not....
    Peace

Do you not think there may be special times in our lives when we "sense" the presence of the Holy Spirit more than other times?

    Cheers,

    Jim

You're probably talking about his book about the Holy Spirit. And he did not say that he "received" the Holy Spirit when he had that warm, peaceful feeling, but rather that he was "filled" with the Holy Spirit. God's Spirit never leaves a believer, but He gives us special fillings from time to time, usually as preparation for something He has planned for us to do for Him.

You still haven't proven anything other than you misread his book.

I've posted quotes before, but I'm on my tiny phone...so it won't be tonight. Maybe try a search of the archives. Free Grace theologians hold to ME for the most part, what Stanley is.

Well, you did not hear him correctly. I have his book "Handbook for Christian Living" right in front of me and in the chapter titled "Repentance" he writes:

"Repentance for those outside Christ means a change of mind. The unbeliever is to change his mind about what he believes concerning Jesus Christ. He moves from unbelief to belief that Jesus Christ paid the penalty for his sin."

"Repentance and belief are so intertwined that they are almost synonymous. You cannot have one without the other."

I did a search online and didn't come up with much. Nothing I could verify as true anyway.

But I've been looking through his book "Handbook for Christian Living" and in the chapter titled "The Millennium" he says nothing about exclusionism.

If I'm not mistaken he goes into ME'ism in his book Eternal Security.

Sorry for the confusion, so he was filled with the Holy Spirit, which he had received before but didn't recognize Him? Now I understand [lol]

I really didn't know that I was trying to prove anything in the first place, but its quite possible I misread it--you seem to be to Stanley as "fellowships" are to Shakespeare......I'm curious to know what his exposition on Acts 19 is.

OK I have to eat some humble pie! I just found my book the Wonderful Spirit filled life, and it appears he indeed say He "the Spirit" was there all the time, he just didn't recognize him--sorry!!:love2::godisgood:

It still seems as though I had gotten that from something he wrote, but for now I apologize! God bless

OK I'm writing this and then I'm done [I promise :)] He did write of the day when he was about to teach a class as his "first encounter with the Holy Spirit"--which I consider to be a bit confusing.

Yes I heard him correctly. His own elder/deacon said it would be edited out of the tape. I wish I had kept a copy of the tape, but I did not. I have tried to look on line and find something and here is one link and even though this is not what I am talking about of what of what I listened to it is an example. I cannot verify its accuracy as I do not have any of Dr. Stanley's books. One thing about this link. I did not read the whole article and it looks like the person has a argument with Dr.Stanley, but he does give some references. I just cannot verify them.

freeatlast, I find that on here, whenever someone finally does prove something, it doesn't matter anyway, and the opponent will argue away the clear proof.

Yes that is true, un fortunately. When we cling to a man instead of the truth we will defend error every time. I listened to Dr. Stanley for years and when I heard the message I was shocked. I had to listen to it several times because it was totally out of character for him to say what he said. This took place around the time of his divorce and perhaps the stress caused him to be confused, but none the less in this discussion it is my opinion he should have been asked to correct his statement or step down just like the others that have been mentioned.
It is always sad to see those who we have trusted in began to error because of age or some other reason but if we love the Lord and them we will ask them to step down is needed be as this is what they would want if they were in their right mind.

In that case, "Free Grace" must mean different things to different people. For some, the words "Free Grace theologians" clearly must mean something other than "theologians who believe in God's free grace."

I know this has cropped up in other threads, for instance in the thread Are Free Grace Christians Same Theology as Classic Arms? I said in post 5 of that thread: "You'd first need to define what you mean by "Free Grace Christians." No one answered that, so I am still unsure what the OP in that thread meant by "Free Grace", just as I am not sure what you mean by the term. Allan wrote in the other thread:
Free Grace view is closer to the modern day Arminianists which go even further than the Wesleyan Arminians in their views.
There are several examples of churches that have the words "Free Grace" in their church name, but who certainly do not "hold views that go even further than the Wesleyan Arminians", nor do they believe the doctrine known as Millenial Exclusion. I gave some links to some such churches in that thread. I'll just repeat one here: Free Grace Baptist Church Belvedere, Kent, UK. There is not the slightest hint that they are Arminian, or that they believe in ME.

So I am still left wondering who you (Webdog) mean by "Free Grace theologians," and who JesusFan meant by "Free Grace Christians" in the other thread, which he started. I don't even know Charles Staley, so the fact that you mentioned him is no clue to me. :)

don't remember him EVER saying that he believed as pentecostals in 'second act of Grace", nor "Baptism in Holy Ghost", and I have followed him past 20 years, since being saved!

he "might" have stated that Acts had a 'special" case of one getting HS after faith in Christ!

Amen I think I've already addressed this issue--his wording in the book "The Wonderful Spirit filled life" is confusing--I'm at my daughters volleyball game so I don't have the book --in it he refers to a day he encountered the Holy Ghost after he was already saved--that is how I formed that opinion--I also addressed Acts 19 earlier --God bless

If you can't verify it, then it is only gossip, which is sin.

This article takes a statement (unverifiable) out of context and attempts to trash the whole career and ministry of a Godly man. Shameful.
