Recently a brother told me that he was confident belief that Christ will return in his lifetime.

Now the brother only has me by a few years. So that means in my lifetime too.

    I don't know about that!

People have been expecting it to be in their lifetime since Jesus ascension. I think it is quite natural. I am not sure whether it will or it won't for it maybe tomorrow or it maybe 1,000 years from now. I am confident enough in God to leave it in His hands.

Scripture states we are to live as though He IS going to return soon, therefore most likelyin our lifetime. Paul did and He seemed quite confident that Christ's return might be in his life time as did the early church.
In so doing were they/are we living a lie??

The fact is we don't know when His return is but it 'could be' tonight. I am confidient that the Lord is coming and the truth is, it might very well be in my lifetime. But I think that brother might have worded it better, mayabe something like:

I am confident that Christ will return and most likely in lifetime. Yet if He doesn't I know I will be with Him whether here or there, but his coming IS soon!

Then again this brother might be under the impression he really DOES beleive he will see Christ coming before he dies.. Since I don't know him, I will not speak anymore for him.. :)

Couldn't you say that at the very moment of your death, He has come for you? I expect to see Him just as Steven did.

Does our eschatology have anything to do with this whole matter?

Whether or not He comes in my lifetime, I don't know. It'd be OK with me if He did, but it's not up to me to decide.

OTOH, I'll continue to echo the words of the second last verse in the Bible: "Even so, come, Lord Jesus"!

We should "love His appearing" as Paul did. Paul expected the LORD's return in his lifetime and I believe we are close and His return for His church is imminent...can happen anytime...."In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye"

2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

I penciled Him in last year but he had to reschedule. I told Him not to make anymore appointments, just come anytime and I'll be ready.

Since I don't know when my life on this earth will end, and the Bible does not tell us precisely when the Second Coming will be, I have to answer, "I do not know."

    In answer to the OP:

If He doesn't it'll kill me.
I sincerely believe that either he will come in my lifetime or I will die waiting for him...

J/K. This is a great discussion question, and should be turned into a poll.

    Not so fast, TinyOne.
If you have 'ETERNAL' life (which fact, you must be aware, has been questioned by some on this board ) you cannot refer to it as a 'lifetime,' for 'lifetime' indicates a beginning and an ending.
Not only this, but anything eternal is theoretically freed from the restraint of 'time' altogether and thus cannot be considered a 'lifetime.'
Furthermore, assuming that your 'ETERNAL' life will be spent in heaven (for the sake of honest representation, I must again insert that some of us on this august board have shared our doubts regarding the foundation and veracity of your opinions), and the Word of God (in whatever version you choose) plainly states that there is no time to be had there, you cannot call your existence there a 'lifetime.' In fact, this is a outright denial of clear teaching and crucial doctrine may indicate that your 'lifetime' could in fact nearing its maturity date. But don't worry: Jesus could come today...
