I heard about this a few years ago. I think it was the name of an intramural team composed of Native Americans. Their mascot was a businessman in a suit carrying a briefcase.

Can anyone read what it says on the banner under "Whities"?

They attacked UNC Pembroke a few years ago. They are the "Braves."

UNC Pembroke was founded as a native American school in 1887 for the expressed purpose of training native American teachers to teach in the segregated public school system. The student body has a majority of native Americans.

My paternal great-grandfather was a full-blooded Cherokee. I live in the area where "The Trail of Tears" originated. I have sipped water from a spring at the Red Clay Council Ground BEFORE it was a national park. I believe that Native Americans (in general) have been horribly mistreated throughout American history.

HOWEVER, I do NOT think that naming my favorite baseball team "The Braves" or doing the "tomahawk chop" or the "indian chant" in ANY WAY demeans my heritage. I do NOT think that it insults any Indian nation. I believe it acknowledges a "warrior status" which USED to be a "badge of honor", and I do not know how having an Indian mascot hurts someone of Indian heritage. NO ONE is making fun of Indians with the tomahawk chop--in fact, they're saying LOOK OUT, WE'RE STRONGER THAN YOU AND WE'RE GOING TO CUT YOU DOWN.

Sorry, I just don't get the problem. But, then, it ALSO would not bother me if they had a mascot of say, "the Fighting Irish" (oh, WAIT there is one! LOL), the "beam-me-up Scotties", the Tennessee hillbillies, the Georgia Rednecks, or the Alabama bumpkins either--and that covers my entire heritage!

It's a GAME people!!! No one's laughing at you!!! Everyone's playing and having a good time--that should prove that there's nothing negative about it!

I agree completely! My great-grandmother was Cherokee, and the name does not offend me at all. I am proud of my heritage. I don't understand why some are offended.

I would allow my son to play on a team named the "Blue Devils," etc., because it's just a name. It's not demonic, or in any way associated with demonic activity.

I know the Florida Seminoles completely support, as a group, the Florida State University mascot. Why wouldn't they? I'd think it would be an honor, not something demeaning. Teams are named after Indians and such because the perception is they have prowess in battle. That's a recognition of greatness.

Gwen, I wonder if you are related to Hopeful, as she said her ancestors were also Cherokee.

    Good one, Hopeful! :wavey:

We probably really are related. Most of my people came from NC to GA and TN.

I agree with Hopeful. Team names are generally chosen because they indicate qualities they want the team to have. Who is going to name their team the "worms" or "cowards"? Maybe the 'neanderthals'???

Native Americans and all the PC folk should understand these names for what they are: compliments and references to bravery, courage, and a fighting spirit.

As far as the demon/devil teams are concerned, I don't like it, but no one asked me....
