Augustus Toplady wrote, "His Doctrinal and Practical Writings will live, and be admired, and be a standing blessing to posterity, when their opposers are forgotten, or only remembered by the refutations he has given them. While true Religion, and sound Learning have a single friend remaining in the British Empire, the works and name of Gill will be precious and revered."

It's good to remind folks that Toplady and Gill were so close to each other theologically . Though the former was from the Church of England and the latter was from a Particular Baptist background . Toplady admired the Christian heart of John Gill and his vast learning .

And , like his Lord , Gill has been despised and rejected by many . Despite all the harsh words that have been thrown at him -- he has been a boon to the Christian Church throughout the centuries . Spurgeon was proud to be a successor of him . And , in case you haven't been paying attention -- the immediate minister who followed Dr. Gill was my namesake : John Rippon .
