dressing up for church

I have avoided this thread as it is so very many pages long and I don't know whether I can hold my tongue for that many pages without having my say, but I have noticed that here I am only on page 2 and there you are having said now for the 2nd time something with which I must shout that I AGREE and I like YOU. You are right on about the snotty attitudes on here.

Now having said that, I'll go on to say that that comment by Johnv: "So feel free to go as your conscience dictates, and your congregation preferrs". The congregation be hanged!!! I go to church to worship God, not to be approved of by any congregation.

While I would like to be able to show up on Sunday morning wearing clothing in which I am comfortable, I was reared to beleive in that non-scriptural brain-washed philosophy that dictates that I am somehow unholy if I am not in my Sunday best. I also realize that such an attitude is "religion based" instead of Christian based. It's that old "spirit of religion" rearing its ugly head again.

Here in Augusta Georgia we have muggy hot humid weather from about mid-March to about mid-October. The Summers extend from mid-Spring to mid-Fall. High humidity and all. Sweltering heat.
An undershirt beneath a long or short sleeved white shirt that is buttoned all the way up to the collar along with a necktie and a suit coat causes me to perspire from the top of my head, down my beet red face, and on down my torso.

Give me that loose fitting open collared short sleeved shirt if you please and if I didn't feel like it was halloween I might even consider a long robe like the people in the middle east wear to REALLY be cool and comfortable.

Oh yeah, and Dr. Bob, let me just say to you re: your comment: "If on a camping trip, blue jeans and polo shirt is activity-appropriate".
Bow ties went out of style in the '50s unless you are wearing very formal attire, and I would hardly call THAT activity-appropriate to its wearability at church services, in my humble opinion.

 

Well, I confess.

I wore Carhart jeans and a dark blue button down shirt to church tonight with Docker shoes. I wore my Outdoor Channel Jacket and hung it up as soon as I go there.

Tonight was our Monthly Family Night Meal and Youth Bible Bowl Quiz.

Yep, I'm the pastor and nobody there tonight had on a tie.

Come to think of it - I didn't see a single woman in a dress either - We were under a Winter Storm Advisory and already had ice and snow on the ground, but then they probably wouldn't have worn dresses or skirts if the weather had been good.

 

From what you described, you didn't go to church, you went to a social gathering with a meal and a game time. What did yall do for entertainment? Isn't the Wednesday ight service the "Prayer Meeting"? I suppose yall did pray, and I am NOT being "snotty".

 

We prefer skirts and dresses for ladies but we believe it is an individual's conviction to act upon the teaching of God's Word.

For the men, our pastor wears a long sleeved shirt with a tie, as do the deacons and others who are serving, like the ushers.

I do think that there are those (members) who could do better since they probably dress better for work on mondays to saturdays, they ought to honor the King of Kings on Sunday.

Just to share an experience. In my church, coats (suit and tie) are only for very special occasions like the ordination of a pastor. (This being the tropics..... but probably also a cultural thing....)

SO when we visited a baptist church in Ireland (last June, holidaying) we were fairly under dressed since most men were in suits and the ladies in brimmed hats. A group of 4 young men walked by our pew and my then-three yr old son remarked, "Wow, so many song leaders!"

Amazing! People are jumping on Hardsheller for this 'service'. Do you even realize that the Youth Bible Bowl Quiz is quite an event where the youth of the church answer questions about scripture, Biblical locations, persons, etc? It's quite fast paced and very exciting (spiritually to me)! We have it once a year in conjunction with our AWANA program and the adults are shamed that the children know so much more than they!

Uh, we go to church for the purpose of worship, I don't care much for what other Baptists do on Wednesday night. No. I wasn't throwing off on the quiz thing, but does competition belong in the House of Prayer? No.

If you want to play fun and games the fellowship hall is usually right next to the church building. We have plenty of meals and times of play, right after the Worship time.

The mentality portrayed in this thread alone shows the mindset of many who seem to think God's House is a community club and a place to play and entertain.

We're serious about worship and it's no wonder the Lord has blessed, uh, He likes worship, people like fun and games, uh, hardsheller?
