    I just ate a big steak....mmmmmmmmmmmm....it was good :D

seriously though, militancy about a topic like vegetarianism vs. omnivorism is a hard sell. Like I said before I like meat, I eat more balanced now than when I was in college and feel better. I have no desire to go vegetarian, not my cup of soup.

    Such an interesting thread...

Well she may remember someoen said that, but it wasn't me, I've never said I knew someone who worked at a slaughter house.

I saw the video---though not on youtube---it made national ABC, FOX news also

I can say that the treatment of the Bovine seen on the video WAS inhuman---and that the workers who participated ought to be rounded up, fired from their jobs, and processed by a court of law for crimes against animal nature---IOW---the workers should be arrested, and if found guilty should be sentenced to prison for the maximum limit allowed.

IMHO---there was no excuse for the handling of the cows in the process they were handling them in the video

Now, here's what I think about the news media and those who recieve the news being telecasted-----the media gets "caught up" in a broadcast such as the one in the video---they show the clips over and over and over and over again to the American public

Suddenly----it appears as if EVERY cattle processing company in the USA is inhuman---know what I mean??

Sorta like when I was in Junior High school and would flunk a test----I would tell my daddy-----"Everyone else flunked it, too!!!!"----when I know that wasn't true!!!!

Its also sorta like when a Policeman is caught in inhuman treatment of a prisoner----suddenly---in the eyes of those who watch the video over and over and over again----every cop is like that---you can't trust um!!!

Its just like during the Vietnam war-----when US soldiers would mistakenly kill innocent civilians---among whom some were women and children and infants-----------suddenly the US Army, US Navy, US Marines, and US Air Force are labled as "Baby Killers!!!" Even the President gets in on the label---remember this one

"Hey, Hey!!! LBJ, how many babies did you kill today????"

Go ahead and watch the video------see the crimes and press for the arrest and conviction of the workers----but don't label every processor as inhuman

My wife, children & I live on my wife's dads cattle farm----125 head of Bovine----with three very happy Brangus bulls!!!!!! Nothing thrills us than to go out and see a newborn calf----legs still a little wobbly and momma cow watching close

The cows are grass fed free range(inside the barbed wire fence, of course) on almost 200 acres of land-----of which land is not suitable for "Row crop" production----too rocky---if row cropping were attempted---it would wreck the row crop equipment required

Right now we're feeding 3 bales of hay per day(approx 4% protein) along with a 15% protein range cube cattle feed----the Bovine we have are "Pets"----some will let you rub their heads and some will eat out of your hand----none are treated inhumanily

Some people can be vegetarians, but not me. I am an omnivore with carnivorous tendencies. I don't knock people who have made that choice, though.

PETA is a bunch of fruitcakes, however. If they had their way animals would be running the show, not us. I do not go out of my way to hurt an animal, but in the end it is still an animal and not equal to a human being. The only "rights" it has are the ones we grant it.

It is common knowledge that before the white man came and there were no guns, a tribe would kill and skin wolves so that the skin could be worn as a disguise. While in wolf's clothing they would stealthily approach a herd of buffalo causing them to stampede. Directing the herd toward a cliff the buffalo would plunge to the death trying to escape the "wolves". Cruel but the tribe survived another winter.

Lets face it. It is not easy to be an animal. Frankly I am glad that I am on top of the food chain.

Alright. I really like this post
Yeah, that makes sense. Yet IMHO, most Cattle Processing Companies do abuse their animals. See the video where we buy our meat. There are so many reports about it, and no regulations to stop the abuse.

Sorta like when I was in Junior High school and would flunk a test----I would tell my daddy-----"Everyone else flunked it, too!!!!"----when I know that wasn't true!!!!
I agree. The more it's played, the more potent it becomes. One reason why I don't have an antenna on my TV, avoid the media and only watch pre-screened movies.
Thanks for the reminder. So true.
    That's nice to know :)
And what a nice place to live!

Hey Joe, I've tried Veganism before, and I just want to tell you to be very careful about buying all that PETA, or any other pro-vegetarian group says. The vegan diet, as this article will show, does not work well with all people. Often there are short term results, but long term failure. There is a TON of benefits in eating less meat and more vegetables, but for me, I function best when I have some meat.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the other "PETA" organization.

Stands for "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals".

OK, I know! It's not original.

But like the late 'Uncle Miltie' Berle, and some politicians, "I know a good line when I steal one!"

I live in cattle country, y'all...and I don't see any cattle being mistreated around here! It does make one wonder, though...I mean, I'm not for mistreating animals or anything like that. I love animals, and my hubby and I both dream of owning enough land to have cattle and horses of our own someday. But...is it really worth getting in such an uproar about animals that are going to be killed for food anyway?!! I understand the outrage about conditions that are ripe for disease because nobody wants to get sick off of anything they eat, but if it's just that they're crowded or being kept inside, does that really matter in the grand scheme of things when you're planning to kill them and eat them?

Yes, it does. We are to be good stewards of what God has created, as told in Genesis.

I think the beef recall and the cries of animal cruelty in concerning this meat company are much ado about nothing. I've seen the videos of this so-called abuse on TV, and all I've seen were folks trying to goad a 1000+ pound animal to get on its feet and get moving. How would you do it?

Shamgar had an ox goad. Do you think he was cruel to his beasts of burden?

    Yes, it does matter

The cows in the video appeared either sick or crippled-----and come to think about it----the cattle in question did not look like any sort of Beef stock cattle I've seen---rather they looked more along the lines of older Dairy cows----like Holstein or a similiar breed---regular beef cows are lower build, and younger than the ones in question------I betcha if you investigate a little further---the cows in question WERE from a Dairy herd destined for a slaughter house to process dog food or something similiar.

I've been to the cattle sales with my father in law on numerous occasions----and I can assure you ------- the auction barn where we carry cattle(Ashville, AL)---WILL NOT take cattle off of the trailer if the animals cannot walk off themselves----and forget it if you bring a trailer load of stock that has Black Leg or some other crippling disease or some sort of lung infection or the like!!

You are probably somewhat correct on all counts, here.

"Down" cattle will not be sold here, locally, and the amimal must be able to walk off the trailer or truck, on their own. However, 'cull' dairy cattle are sold, with some destined for 'dog food' as well as 'hamburger', as are other non-dairy (read beef breeds) animals, as well. Depending on the animal, the older ones are referred to as "cutters" or "canners", relative to the general use of the animals. Also younger 'dairy stock', especially steers and bulls are routinely sold destined for human consumption, as well.

BTW, I have not seen the video, FTR.

FTR, the main diseases in question, as regards humans, are not apparent from only visually looking at an animal.

Yeah, a little meat probably won't hurt anyone even though it's full of hormones, antibiotics and other drugs. Also cows are herbivores, yet often fed ground up road kill etc...to save $$. Still, you will probably be alright.
I know a lot about vegetarianism, we were vegetarian. My inlaws and the majority of our friends are vegetarian/vegans. The others, including ourselves, eat very little meat and it's usually organic. We have an organic meat company here in town so it's easy to buy good meat. The majority of us are healthy except some of us have bones which aren't as strong as they should be. Overall, vegetarians are in much better health than the rest of the population.

Imo, we have to weigh our non-organic meat consumption with this verse also-

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

What's with the crack about "ground-up road kill etc." being fed to beef cattle?

While you are entirely correct that hormones, antibiotics, "and other drugs", if by that you mean (but I would assume you do not) they receive vaccinations, etc., against diseases, are administered, just as humans receive preventative treatment for potential diseases such as polio, tetanus, whooping cough, flu, measles, etc., there is nothing that suggests what you are implying, at least currently.

It was actually the ingestion of processed "blood and bone meal", from cattle (and sheep) remnants, that included nerve and brain tissue, once fed routinely in Europe (as was "steamed-bone meal" in the United States), that led to the outbreak(s) of "mad-cow" disease. That was subsequently banned, when the outbreak of "BSE", and the relationship to feeding these ruminant products was discovered.

But the 'slam' is uncalled for, as well as inaccurate.

I have no problems with one who chooses to be a 'vegan', or a vegetarian, BTW, but it is a personal choice, and is not supported or demanded in any way by Scripture. And I would suggest that we have to 'weigh', all our consumption of what we eat, and not just single out (so-called) 'non-organic meat', in light of the Biblical verse you mentioned, as well as other verses in Scripture. Do you (or anyone else) consume any "non-organic" vegetables? Do they count?? If not, why not?? FTR, the incidence of Type II Diabetes, a disease which I have, incidentally, is highest among those who consume large quantities of starchy foods, which are vegetarian foods by definition. This is very apparent in areas such as Hawaii and Polyunesia. Can you say "Poi"?

BTW, the comment that "Overall, vegetarians are in much better health than the rest of the population." is a pseudo-scientific 'conclusion', at best, and I would suggest that this is on very shaky ground, scientifically, as well. (Can you say "San Andreas Fault"?)

    Ed, the cattle farmer.

There are no "cracks" or "slams", in my posts. Please calm down Ed, thanks.

This touches a nerve close to me as I'm a farmer.

First off, I think this recall is a bunch of bunk!

No one was getting sick from this meat and I repeat, no one. It's just some crazy animal rights activists trying to put an end to our industry.

First off, God gave us permission to eat meat.

I saw the pictures. There was nothing killed here that was harmful. What do people expect you to do with a critter that gets laid up? Let it suffer to die?
Shoot it and let it go to waste?

No, a crippled or poor doing critter is sold and it is sold "subject" which means when she's killed, it will *not* go into the food chain unless it is internally healthy and the "affected part" i.e. broken leg, lump jaw, bad eye, whatever is cut out and disposed of.

Do people actually think that the fine fat feeder cattle in a feedlot are the source of hamburger????

Of course not, it is old cows and crippled stock. It's a sin people going hungry and we're tossing out over a million pounds of hamburger. I wish they'd send some of it my way. I wouldn't be afraid of it because I can guarantee it is not much if any different from hamburger you'll find in most any supermarket, especially if you buy the cheap stuff in the plastic tube.

Yes, there are hormones in all of our meat. There are natural hormones produced by nature. Then there are hormones given to stock to help them grow. I don't approve of this but the only way you can be guaranteed this is not present in meat or milk is raise your own or buy from someone you can trust.

I hate to tell you but there is plenty of these hormones in our drinking water too, so what are you going to do, worry about it?

May God have mercy on us for wasting all that meat which could have fed thousands.

These crazy animal rightzers are the ones who need help. How is it humane to let a critter suffer and die? Isn't it better to slaughter it and end it's suffering and use it if it is usable. If it isn't usable it goes to rendering. Maybe some of these women who paint themselves like Jezabel should think of where their cosmetics come from. Tankage from the rendering works is used in a lot of that slop.
