Email address harvesting from here ?

I did not want my very first post here to be a negative one, however I would appreciate some experiences from others ...

I only registered here last night, using an email address which I created specifically for this board. Already I am starting to get junk mail through on the address although the address being used is not quite correct ... I am being addressed as peach477 rather than r_henderson ...

The two senders so far are "LOLFUN" and "GossipFlash" ...

Moderator / Webmaster - on the assumption that you do not disclose email addresses, is the board being harvested without your knowledge?

    Regards,

    Roy Henderson

It is possible that your new email was harvested from your email providor. I have been here over a year and like you created an email address to use here. In that time I have not had a spam problem at that address.

i have never received junk mail since signing up here.
There are programs that harvest emails from bulletin boards and guestbooks
hopefully you use an anonymous email address when using these services, not your real one.

Hello, Mr. Henderson and welcome to the board!

I assure you that this site does not sell nor give any personal information to anyone else, however, you have publicly displayed your e-mail on your post(s) and in your profile. When your registration was first approved, your screen name was displayed at the top of the index page. This screen name was a link to your profile.

If you wish to change the option to not display your e-mail address, simply click the link in the upper right hand of the screen entitled "my profile" and then click the link that says "» View/Update Profile «". You will find the proper option there.

As for harvesting, we are a reasonably secure site but we will watch for any intrusions.

Again, welcome to the board. [IMG]

    Welcome. [IMG]
Many places scan boards and other places on the net to pick up e-mail addresses. It's a cheap dirty trick, and you can help!
How? Set up a page in the internet with a fake list of e-mails. :D What the hey, set up 10! If enough people do this, it might be enough to start throwing the places who harvest addresses, and it'll reduce everyone's junk e-mail totals.

Gina, who hates junk e-mail, especially the ones from Kimmy and Jen!

.. well the replies are certainly positive - thank you! I guess I was just surprised to start getting hit on an email address which was only hours old. It obviously doesn't look like this board is the problem ... maybe the junk mail wizzards like Scotsmen!

Thanks to all for comments and we can consider this one closed.

    Best regards to all,

    Roy

The BaptistBoard.com does NOT collect or sell email addresses. BaptistMail.NET (not to be confused with BaptistMail.com) on the other hand may sell your email address as most email service providers do.

.. I think I now understand why I am receiving the junk mail and it has nothing to do with this site. It was just pure coincidence that the junk started hours after I registered here.

So, the BaptistBoard is completely exhonourated!

it doesn't matter if the site sells the addresses or not - a half decent programmer can knock an application to harvest mail addresses in a couple of hours - you just write a script that opens the page and pulls out any mailto links.

There are components that you can buy to do this in any case.

basically if you put your real e-mail address up and it is not disguised in some way (ie. [email protected] or whatever) it can be harvested.
