I was wondering how many have seen the movie the 'Exorcism of Emily Rose'? And those who have do you believe that she was really possessed and those things she wrote in the letter the night before her death were true? To the Catholics on this board how long do you have to wait before you can become a saint? And will Emily become a saint?

I recently saw this on video. Yes I believe the Devil has great power and can and does possess people.

I do not know the whole story only the movie which is probably distorted. I have read a story of an American case in the early 20th century and it sounded hideous and utterly terrifying.

It served as a warning not to dabble in occult in ouija boards that silly teenagers get attracted to.

There are many acknowledged saints and many unaknowledged. All souls who go to Heaven are saints anyway. The church process for becoming a saint is a long drawn out and tedious business.

It certainly seems "Emily" was a saint but whether anything happens we will have to wait and see. St Padre Pio is a 20th century saint who did frequent battle with Satan, the evil one assaults the just very strongly.

I was always skeptical about stories of possession. I thought it was a radical Pentecostal thing.

In one pastorate in Saskatchewan, we had a missionary speaker from Haiti. We also had a young girl in the church who was a problem at every turn. As this missionary spoke about possessions, the young woman's family came forward, with tears streaming down their cheeks, asking this man about their daughter. Long story, shorter.....He offered to hold a special meeting, with the laying on of hands, anointing with oil and prayer for this young lady. I witnessed a revolution take place right there in the room as we prayed; the kicking, screamng and foaming at the mouth, and after a number of hours, the peace and tranquility that overcame this girl. She emerged a completely different person, and went on to serve the Lord as she matured, went to Bible college and to the mission field.

I remain hesitant to this day, but my mind and heart are more open to the possibility that possession is possible and does happen.

By the way, the missionary was a Baptist, a solid believer and able teacher. He also believes as do I that Satan is bound in this church age and has limitations as to what he can do to God's children, but still has power over the unsaved. This girl was unsaved at the time, even though her family were solid people in their faith.

    Cheers,

    Jim

The NT has many stories of demon possession and even to the point of Christ telling His disciples that one of the aspects of their ministry is to cast out demons.

Better to just stick with the Bible people.

I find this somewhat funny coming from an SDA.

Exorcism is an accepted doctrine in Anglican theology. Anglicans are biblical people. They preserved the doctrines for years.

You would not if you had read 1Cor 14:1-2.

The whole concept of The "Emily Rose" character being possesed is contrary to doctrine. In the movie, she was portrayed as a christian. Yet the Bible teaches us that those whom the Holy Spirit dwells in cannot be possesed by a demonic spirit. This movie, and other syndicated versions are just hollywood.

Not everyone who "SAYS" Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven.

The fact that someone claims to be a Christian, is Baptized - lives in a Christian home - attends church - does not make them a spirit-filled born again saint.

    AMEN!

I believe Christians can be 'Oppressed'. That is pressed down, picked on, panicked, decieved, etc. By the enemy...

But, they can not be 'Owned' or 'controlled' (possesed) by the enemy...

    Two scriptures come to mind:

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

    -and-

    Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

He will fight for me! :D

    -and-

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Question: is the "binding" automatic or do we have to/need to 'resist the devil"?
    AMEN!
    AMEN!
