My point if you choose to protest Bill Clinton
should you be made to walk in a ditch and
still get harassed by law enforcement, is this
what it has come down to preaching democracy for
Iraq but denying it at home?

    Free speech ditch

The group stopped along the way and sheriff's deputies in McLennan County advised them that if they wanted to go farther toward the ranch, they would have to walk in a ditch along the road.

The marchers walked about half a mile until the deputies stopped them, saying that they had violated their instructions by walking on the road itself instead of staying in the adjacent ditch.

Sheehan protested, saying she had not walked on the road. The deputies refused to let her go farther.

No matter where you stand you could be a anti
abortion protester going to protest Bill Clinton
or you could be a protester against NAFTA and
Cafta and the outsourcing of American jobs..you
should not be told to walk in a ditch.

Rueters has a different angle but still protesters
were not allowed to walk on the road even if
    by accident.

    http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N0639984.htm

The group of protesters, including U.S. veterans from the Iraq and Vietnam wars, were loud yet peaceful and McLennan County sheriff's deputies, trying to avoid arrests, stopped them on a road about 5 miles (8 km) from Bush's ranch on a hot August day.

Sounds like they got their protest in, ASLANSPAL. No one can just walk up and talk to the president. No one has a right to expect such or to even expect a White House aide to come out and talk with him.

    I don't see what you're complaining about.

I do hope that one day Ms. Sheehan is able to overcome the bitterness that is consuming her and get on with her life.

The left must be crying for joy that the hope of demonstrations will overthrow Bush. And for that matter there are other parties who consider the war illegal and call for immediate withdrawal. This is certainly a bright day for the left. The only cloud on the horizon might be that as yet there is no draft so the leftist students have no chance of having to serve anyway so why bother to protest? Nevertheless, if Bush keeps on fighting for victory, it will lead to defeat in the off-year elections and then the Democrats can capitulate and withdraw.

I am not sure of the circumstances. You cannot have a parade of people down a road or street without permission or a police escort in many cases.

I sympathize with them but "W killed her son" is inaccurate statement. I think Bush and Rumsfeld have made a mess BUT it is the Terrorists who killed her son and not Bush. Blame President Bush for poor strategy in the War BUT statements like "W killed her son" makes people not want to take them serious.

What else does a Bush Hater have to do. Certainly not support the troops in Iraq, or Afghanstan, or all those places Clinton sent them. If they have their way our troops will come home like they did from Viet Nam, to be spit on by their ilk.

Sorry, ASLANSPAL, but there are security rules to be followed and since you weren't present I don't think you are in a position to criticize the action of the authorities in that situation. And I doubt that President Bush made any decision about security so that is just more gratuitous bashing of the president on your part without any substance to it.

    play by play being there

Oh the miracle of text msg Ken and how it
can take you there...no matter how you spin it
a mother who lost a son should not be told
    to walk in a ditch...period!

    snippet:
    1:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6

    Diebenow reporting:

We've got about 50-something people walking on the side of the road, in a ditch, all the way up the mile to the Bush ranch. At the first checkpoint, the police ordered them to not walk on the roadway, but in the medium-tall grass along the right side of the road where it is about 10 ft. wide in places, three feet deep in some places. They are kind of straddling the roadway.

There appears to be another checkpoint up ahead, with another car in the middle of the road.

Now two big white dogs are coming out to greet them along the fence. I don't know what kind of dogs they are, but they seem to be friendly. Some rancher's probably.

It's really hot, humid, with people sweating.

Wait. Call you back in a minute.

    1:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6

    Diebenow reporting:

We are at the second checkpoint and the sheriff's department has told the protesters to get off the road. They've been walking on the road, breaking their part of the bargain, the police say.

Some of Cindy's group are now sitting, waiting for Bush to come out. Now more are sitting down.

    snippet:
Protestors are saying that one of their rationales for not getting off the road was that the media was on the road. A police officer said that the media was just following the protestors, but the media is still on the road, with cameras, booms, microphones.

Some protestors are still sitting, but more are now standing.

Police are now telling the media to get on the other side of the road and to not disrupt traffic.

Chanting is still going on (time 1:20).

    More coming.

    2:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6

At the first checkpoint, Sheehan told Officer Vanek: "We don't have the quarrel with you. The quarrel we have is with the President."

At the second checkpoint, she said,"I didn't come all the way from California to stand here in a ditch."

An officer offered to send Bush a letter or a statement from Cindy Sheehan, but she said she didn't want to do that.

Her reply was that they were making the mother of a veteran of the Iraq war walk in a ditch.

An officer got in her face, stopping her.

The crowd starts chanting, "W. killed her son. W. killed her son."

Bush has not come out, none of those anti-protest protestors either.

Sorry Ken you can be there and trust the reporting
are you saying the AP lied or this person lied
and she was not shown the ditch...I will criticize
because it was wrong Ken...if you were to go
carry a sign and protest Nafta of Cafta or anything else and they told you to walk in a ditch
I would be outraged as well...I stand on what my
    topic says

Bush the Emperor out of touch and deaf to the world...his impatience reaps impatience.

Bush must have a scripted event and a hand picked
audience because he cannot deal with people
    disagreeing with him. Phoney!

No one is being leftist or anything it is about
a mother who lost a son in Iraq being shown the
ditch! That is my salient point hillclimber and
you know it..you just want to apologize for
bush again and again and again and again ..lets
    keep enabling a dysfunctional child.
He is a gutless chicken hawk and he has a background to back that up...he has not even
attended one funeral but loves to yuk it up on the
    ranch.

and Ken you lableing Cindy Sheehan as bitter is
your own opinion and not even hers ..you cannot
dimminish a person by labeling them bitter which
implies hate...a person can legitimately take
up a righteous cause as they see fit but I could
see people who oppose her would dimminish her by
calling her bitter...what if she is righteous in
her cause. That is your opinion of her Ken not
even close to hers. Wait a minute your opinion
of her is held from a distance and oh my ..you
have not even spoke to her personally...amazing!

and you know very well KenH that bush could meet
with her ..so shame on him...shame on his arrogance...he is out of touch.

THE SALIENT POINT AND I AM SHOUTING BECAUSE IT
IS EVERY AMERICANS RIGHT TO QUESTION POWER BY
PEACEFUL PROTEST AND TO BE TOLD TO WALK IN A
    DITCH INSULTS OUR DEMOCRACY.imho

You know what? She should have turned around and gone home at that point if she did not want to walk where the police told her to walk. She could have contacted the office of her Congressional Representative or US Senator to express her complaint. They could have asked the White House to write her a letter. This idea of doing all business on the street is part of the hangover from the 60s and disrupts domestic tranquility for no good reason. The President was not on vacation but was meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

I have to do what the police tell me to do. Who does she think she is that she is above the law?

If President Bush met with her then he would set a precedent to meet with every bitter person that comes along because he disagrees with a government policy or the results.

The anti-Bushites had their chance last November and failed. They need to get over it and get on with their lives.

And I hope that Ms. Sheehan overcomes her bitterness some day and is able to move on with her life.

If it had been left up to people like you in the 1960's thru 1980's the hammer and sickle would probably be flying over what was left of this country.

Fortunately for us Reagan defeated the Soviet Union, now there is only China to go!

Please notice I dd not even shout!

She should obey the police or go home the same as every other citizen in the USA, A-Pal; the phrase rule of law means that everyone has to obey the law. If I had been there (which I would not have been)--even though I have not suffered due to the war--I would have had to obey the law.

Bush has been working hard down at Crawford, A-Pal, on terrorism problems in Colombia, South America. You know, you can e-mail The White House with your concerns and so can the lady. Or she can call any Democrat Congressman, can't she?

Why is it that the liberal left in this country want to take to the streets spreading bitterness and hatred? Is it because they know they can't win at the polls? Or do they want to destroy what little pride is left in this country?

As far as protesting against the government, I use the polling places to register my protests. I write letters, and sometimes they even get published. I do not block traffic or attempt to penetrate defenses thrown around our president. The USA and Britain are the only countries in the world with the courage to face these people down.

Now, if we would just stop being so politically correct when speaking of the followers of ISLAM.

She really expected to see the President?? I think people could do that 100 years ago, but not nowadays, it's silly to think she could. They offered to take the Pres. a letter and she didn't want to do that? And chanting W. killed her son?? hmmm Ok. I wonder how he killed her son, did he shoot him or what?
