    Colossians

2011 NIV : He is the one we proclaim.
2011 NIV : obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you
    __________________________
ESV's "eye-service" is really an antiquated way of expressing it.

2011 NIV : Same as NRSV
    2011 NIV : I vouch for him
    _______________________________
ESV's "bear him witness" is rather out-of-place for a 21st century English version.

Again, one must lament, why wasn't the ESV based on the NRSV, which would have corrected so much gobbledegook.

So I think I counted 50 snips of passages. In 16 of them the current NIV and the NRSV were identical. In one place the ESV and 2011 NIV were the same. I have yet to compare the 2011 NIV readings with the 84 model.

Do any of you have any problems with any of the NRSV or 2011 NIV renderings in this thread? If so, which ones and why? I have already spoken of why I object to some of the ESV renderings.

I don't understand. Shouldn't a version 12 years newer show more care? Maybe the "but" should be an "and." Or maybe you mean something else?

I meant to say:"The ESV is about a dozen years newer than the NRSV, but the latter shows a bit more care in updating the language of the RSV."

The ESV, despite micro incremental improvements here and there speaks in the language of yesteryear. It communicates more stiffly than the Modern Language Bible of 1969 and the Norlie New Testament of 1961. I'll go so far as to say that the Twentieth Century New Testament of 1904 is more modern sounding than the ESV. Toss in the Weymouth as well.

Shouldn't the question be which version is closest to what was intended and written though by the writers of the texts, not which one is easiest to understand?

Would say that the 1901 Asv is a better translation in that regard to Esv/Niv/Nrsv etc!
