ESV or NASB?

    Why prefer the ESV or the NASB? Well, the NASB is quite literal, yet at times overly so. The ESV is less so but literal and readable enough, yet not without flaws.

    Now, if you're asking us to show why we prefer one over another, that's another story.

    The three translations I regularly read are the NASB, KJV, and NKJV. But I just couldn't imaging my doing any serious study without my NASB. The NASB has been a great blessing to me since I first received one in the mid 1970's.

    Most days, it's a draw. For study, I always reach for the NASB. But the ESV's more consistent use of gender accurate language and its ability to translate idioms more readably draws me back to it. Plus, it's so much like the NIV in places. However, it's also like the RSV/NRSV in spots, and many times this is a bad thing because of poor translational choices. So I love the NASB, but as Rick Mansfield says, the ESV just grows on you.

    So call it a draw. I have translation schitzophrenia :)

    Is there a correlation between the ESV and being Calvinistic (as some suggest) AND did some of you choose the ESV knowing the correlation, and to make a statement about your own adherence to Calvinism, and to be equated with Calvinism by choosing it?

    No correlation. Everyone claims one version is this or that, like the NASB with dispensationalism. The NIV has been called Arminian and Calvinistic, dispy and Historical Premil. So I wouldn't read too much into it. No evidence (save for the blog-o-lifes) that would make me think there's a proclivity to one theological stance or another.

    Yes, and I understand those things concerning the versions, I just wondered if any person might admit to selecting it, and to doing so partially for it's perceived connection to Calvinism or Reformed theology.
