Aw, you knew this was coming -- didn't you? On another thread I have compared the ESV with NIRV renderings. Here I will compare the ESV with TNIV. (May I share a secret? I kinda' favor TNIV.)

    Isaiah

    10:1
ESV : those who decree iniquitous decrees
TNIV : those who make unjust laws

    10:7
ESV : to cut off nations not a few
TNIV : to put an end to many nations

    13:7
ESV : every human heart will melt
TNIV : every man's heart will melt
[What? The TNIV caught the celebrated male nuance and the ESV missed this? Sarcasm off.]

    19:17
ESV : will fear because of the purpose that the Lord of hosts has purposed against them
TNIV : will be terrified, because of what the Lord Almighty is planning against them

    20:2
    ESV : loose the sackcloth
TNIV : Take off the sackcloth

    27:4
ESV : Would that I had thorns and briers to battle!
TNIV : If only there were briers and thorns confronting me!

    35:4
ESV : with the recompense of God
    TNIV : with divine retribution

    41:24
ESV :an abomination is he who chooses you
TNIV : those who choose you are detestable

    45:10
ESV : With what are you in labor?
TNIV : What have you brought to birth?

    48:1
ESV : but not in truth and right
TNIV : but not in truth and righteousness

    51:3
ESV : he comforts all her waste places
TNIV : will look with compassion on all her ruins

    52:7
    ESV : who publishes salvation
    TNIV : who proclaim salvation

I'm completely with you. I'm not out to bash the ESV - it is helpful in some ways - but the TNIV is completely readable and lucid. Being familiar with the work of the committee and having used it personally for several years, I find it to be the most helpful of all modern translations.

Unfortunately, politics seems to have won out in this case and, because of some alarmists in the neo-reformed camp, it's going to be out of here before long.

But I've bought a number of copies for personal use and gifts.

    I completely agree with you.

    I have done the same.

I am looking forward to the 2011 NIV. But still, in some places I may still prefer the TNIV rendering.

By the way, TNIV committee just completed three weeks of revision work in Whistler Canada.

During master's theological work, I sat under one of the NT translators and a project coordinator. His scholarship and expertise were amazing. Critics of the text were, sadly, misinformed and in many cases, as was such with J.I. Packer, misquoted and misconstrued.

I also am looking forward to the new NIV, but will still probably carry my TNIV.

I think the release of the NIV 2011 is going to be a watershed moment in evangelicalism, and I can't wait. I'm holding off on pew Bible recommendations until then. A lot of us have high hopes that the mistakes of the NIV/TNIV and that improvements over the NET/ESV/NASB/HCSB can be offered. Maybe that's wishing too much.
