Has anyone had the opportunity to use the Scofield III? If so, what did you think of it? How does it compare to the original Scofield and the New Scofield?

I have an ESV and I like it very much.It seems the Scofield lll is very similar to the regular Scofield so I will wait for something else in a study Bible in the ESV to come out.I don't have the time nor the inclination to pick thruogh all of the errors in the notes on the Reformation Study Bible to many seeds in that water mellon.

My ESV binding has you all beat. I have the whole book of Matthew, followed by 14 chapters of Mark. Right at Mark Chapter 14, my Bible starts back up with Matthew at chapter 14. I have the rest of the book of Matthew (14-end), and then I start completly over with Mark, where it has the whole book. This took me a long time to figure out, and was the source of a great deal of confusion.

    Marcia,

I'm not saying dipensationalists are heretics, but the system is not found in historic Christianity, it is modern in birth and heretical in doctrine

dispensationalism heretical? Paul spoke of dispensations. Are you saying Paul was a heretic.

Your statement that dispensationalists are not heretics, and then turning around and say the doctrine is heresy is countering your own statement.

James says a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

    Ephesians 1:9-10 (nKJV):
having made known to us the mystery of His will,
according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself,
that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times
He might gather together in one all things in Christ,
both F1 which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him.

    FOOTNOTES:
    F1: NU-Text and M-Text omit both.

    Eph 1:9 (KJV1611 Edition):
And hath opened vnto vs the mysterie of his will according
to his good pleasure, which he had purposed in him,
Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulnesse of the times,
he might gather together in one all things,
both which are in heauen, and which are in earth, euen in Christ:

Here is what Strong's says about the
    Greek word translated 'dispensation':

    G3622
    οἰκονομία
    oikonomia
    oy-kon-om-ee'-ah
From G3623; administration (of a household
    or estate); specifically a (religious)
    “economy”: - dispensation, stewardship.

Note that the Greek word 'oikonomia' is the
word from which we get the English term
    'economy'.

Here is a song I head about God's Economy
    (the version in my head):

There's plenty of room in the Family,
Room for the young and the old

As usualy, many arguments are dispelled when
you define what you are talking about.
And there is an advantage to the first person
defining a term. So here is the
    definition of

Dispensationialism - the Doctrine That in
    "the fullness of the times
He (God) might gather together in one
    all things in Christ,"

Getting back on subject, the ESV says it
    very nicely:

    Eph 1:9-10 (ESV):
making known to us the mystery of his will,
according to his purpose, which he set
    forth in Christ
10 as a plan for the fullness of time,
to unite all things in him,
things in heaven and things on earth.

    I recommend y'all get with God's Plan,
I know I am working with God on His plan
    for the ages.

I have switched from the NKJV to the ESV in my preaching and have encouraged our members to get it. Quite a few have. Almost all of us have ours in the Reformation Study Bible. The translation is excellent, the syntax is good, the binding appears well crafted, the font is easy to read, and the notes are the best available, IMO [just expressing my preference, not attempting to start a debate [IMG] ].

BTW, BobbyD, I was also at SBTS when the ESV came out.

Let me make it clear -I should say that Dispensationalism in the Scofield/Darby mold is not found in historic/orthodox Christianity AT ALL until 1830. L.S.Chafer and Scofield made it "acceptable" doctrine.

There are many godly and wonderful Christians that believed in "baby" sprinkling, for example. I wouldn't call them heretics for it, but it is heretical doctrine. There are Christians the believe they are the ultimate control in their salvation ("accepting" Christ to get it and "loosing" it again because of apostasy). I wouldn't call them heretics because they beleived it. It's when someone tries to TEACH these heretical doctrines as absolute Bible truth do I call them a heretic.

I know the word dispensation is found in the Bible, Paul certianly was not speaking of the Scofield/Darby "dispensationalism" of today.

I just started using the ESV (Reformation Study Bible edition). So far, I really like this translation. And, for a Baptist who is mostly RT as to doctrine, I find the study notes very sound and well written. I have found a few instances where I don't agree, but this would be the case with any bible where other individuals have composed notes.

I prefer the ESV and am a calvinist myself, but don't like the Reformation Study Bible (I have it in NKJV). I disagree with the overarching Covenant Theology in just too many places to make it worthwhile.

I have been preaching from the ESV for several years now and the church when buying pew Bibles bought ESV. Mostly out of a courtesy to me, but none the less when someone comes to church without a Bible the Bible they use is an ESV.

BTW, one of my favorite aspects of the ESV is the fact that, in many places, in the footnotes they explain that even though the technially the word is "brother(s)" it applies to women as well. For modern first time Bible readers this can be a serious hangup. The ESV remains faithful to the text while at the same time providing needed understanding for new readers.

For those who may wish to read the ESV but find the font too small or the book too expensive, it can be downloaded for free as an E-Sword module and used in the E-Sword Bible study program which also can be downloaded for free. This program offers its users the option of reading more than 50 different English translations of the Bible, including the ESV, in large type (in order to view it in large type, you need to click on the magnifying glass displayed on the screen).
