In another discussion this subject came up and I thought it would make an interesting topic. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but not since I have been on the BB.

Why do or don't people believe in eternal security? Please provide scripture to back up your beliefs either way.

This is NOT a version discussion, but I would request that everyone posting scripture would use the KJB please. [IMG] Thank you.

    John
    6:39-40
39: And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40: And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

    John10:27-29;
27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29: My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

    Philippians 1:6;
6: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

    I Peter 1:3-5;
3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4: To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5: Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

    Romans 11:29.
29: For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance

    A servant of Christ,

God ordained me "eternal" life, giving me faith to repent and believe.

I did and I believe that, since God cannot lie, His promise is enough to bank on.

  5. 1 John 2:25
And this is the promise that He hath promised us, even eternal life.
I am glad I am not keeping myself saved. I can't keep it. It's not in me it's in Jesus.

Matt 7:323 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (He doesn't say, I USED to know you)
John 3:1-7 Ye must be born again
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life (HATH - present tense)
John 4:13-14 shall never thirst...a well of water springing up into everlasting life (The Greek literally says, "In no wise shall thirst forever")
John 6:28-69 ...he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst...He that believeth on me hath everlasting life...Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day...It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life...thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. (HATH...ETERNAL LIFE)
John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish (NEVER)
John 11:25-26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die (NEVER)
John 17: 2-3 that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him (ETERNAL)
Acts 10:47 which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? (HAVE received)
Acts 13:38-39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses (ARE justified, not going to be)
Rom 3:20, 24, 28 a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law (If you lose it then works played a part)
Rom 4:1-8 Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. (sounds secure to me)
Rom 8:1-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? (NOTHING)
I Cor 2:14 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. (IS spiritual)
    Galatians (Whole book, really)
Gal 2:16, 21 for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified...if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (ANY law or works)
Gal 3:1-2 Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? (If you answer works then Paul says you are foolish)
Gal 5:4 whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. (If you are justified by works then you aren't justified by grace)
Heb 6:18-19 ...impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation...Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast (Inspires my confidence)
Heb 7:25 ...he is able also to save them to the uttermost...seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. (He will win all his cases)
Heb 13:5 I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (the Greek literally says, "In no wise will I leave thee nor in any wise will I forsake thee". It can also be translated, "I will not, I will not cease to sustain thee, I will not, I will not, I will not let you down".)
I pet 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God (We are kept till we actually experience heaven)
I per 2L24-25 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree...ye were as sheep going astray; but are now....(we WERE...but NOW...)
I John 1:7 the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (What is left for me to lose my salvation over?)
I John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life (KNOW...HAVE PASSED)
I John 5:1, 10-13 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God... he hath given us of his Spirit. .(IS BORN, and HATH given)
Jude 1 to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Chris (ARE sanctified and preserved.)
Jude 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless (He is able and who's going to stop him?)
Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, (HAVE redemption)
Eph 1:13-14 in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (SEALED untill REDEEMED)
Eph 4:30, 32 the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption...(ARE sealed)...as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. (HATH forgiven)

Salvation, present tense, sealed, guaranteed till we get to heaven. Sounds like Eternal Security to me.

"Eternal" life which we have on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is not "Eternal" but "Part-Time".

The following verses illustrate the Biblical teaching of Apostasy. This is not a jump in jump out of salvation theory. The saving relationship we have with God is all His work. We do nothing to earn it. God provides the means of salvation, calls us and enables us to accept it. After we enter into this relationship He provides the staying power. He is faithful to His promises. He will not break His covenant with us. However, because we still have the ability to choose to obey or disregard the Holy Spirit’s leading and conviction a person can by not abiding in this relationship come to a point where he/she is so carnal and therefore able to disown Christ. After a person disowns Christ there is no bringing such a person back to repentance.

Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Luke 8:13 They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Mark 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Mark 13:13 And ye shall be hated of all [men] for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast [them] into the fire, and they are burned.

Romans 11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.

1 Corinthians 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring [it] into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as [were] some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Galations 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

    1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Timothy 2:11,12 [It is] a faithful saying: For if we be dead with [him], we shall also live with [him]: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with [him]: if we deny [him], he also will deny us: 13 If we believe not, [yet] he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself

Hebrews 6:4 For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put [him] to an open shame.

Hebrews 6:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
2 Peter 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death , he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death . There is a sin unto death : I do not say that he shall pray for it.

Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

    In the love of Christ,
    Timothy

Once Saved Always Saved... The buzz word for those who believe in Eternal Security... Tell them I'm OSAS... That's the biblical position and doctrine no matter what anyone says... Jesus shall save all his people and not lose a one just like the Holy scriptures declare! [IMG] ... Brother Glen [IMG]

That is a good I am set with my mind closed in my doctrine statement and that is the BIGGEST PROBLEM we Baptists have. We will follow someone doctrine to the death even in the face of obvious Biblical contradictions.

The scriptures are listed in a previous post. Deny saved lost saved, but can it be possible that you beliefs about Apostasy and OSAS are wrong? Please show me just one verse that says believers cannot disown Him or just one that says even after they do they will be saved.

    In the love of Christ,
    Tim

    Timothy,
Some good points. I've been re-evaluating my position regarding "OSAS" lately based on what appears to be the plain meaning of Scripture in most (if not all) of those passages you cited. Another one to consider is 1 Timothy 1:19-20 in which Paul gives examples of folks who "concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck". (Is this referring to their PERSONAL faith or to "THE faith" in general?) I agree that God is the author and perfector of our faith, but I'm not sure that precludes a believer from "punting" that faith through apostasy. (See also 2 Peter 2, esp verses 20-21--sounds like these guys were perhaps "saved" at one point). This is a tough position for a life long Baptist to consider, but then again Christ and the apostles left us with a lot of tough sayings. [IMG]
    Peace.
