It seems the right thing to do would have been to proactively "clean up" the RCC, not leave it and start your own. That seems to have started more problems than anyone cares to count.

And it should also be noted that there are more differences in the Protestant churches than there ever was in the RCC.

 

Interestingly enough, Lutherans still considered themselves Roman Catholics even after Luther was excommunicated and even after they had declared the Pope to be the very Antichrist. The Lutherans were pushing for a universal church council to be held on neutral ground in order to resolve the differences.

The rump Council of Trent was eventually held. It was dominated by those within the Roman church who opposed meaningful reform. The solas of Reformation were thoroughly condemned by Council of Trent and there has been little dialogue since.

You are correct about differences between Protestant sects except for the original Reformation church. The Lutheran Church has always had a very specific and unique confession. Whenever a Lutheran sect forms, like the ECC, it is quickly condemned by confessional Lutherans.
