can someone define "calvinist" work ethic. I haven't a clue what that means.

You're a North American Jim.I thought you'd be familar with the term.It's been variously called the Protestant Work Ethic,the Puritan Work Ethic or the Calvinist Work Ethic -- take your pick.Max Weber (d.1920)coined the term.I haven't read a thing of his.But the idea is that Capitalism sprung-up under John Calvin's teaching in Geneva and became identified with Protestanism in general.The seeds of this "ethic" began the American experiment with the Pilgrim Fathers (Puritans).It just means hard work,thrift,the saving of money etc.which has been characteristic of the West whether someone was really a legitimate Calvinist or not.

 

If they had not drowned in the flood I would have to think clinton was from Cain's offspring. (the memeonites)

Rippon...Thanks. Yes, am sort of North American...Canadian..I have never heard the work ethic called a calvinist ethic. We sure wouldn't want Calvin's social ethic. He believed in torturing and killing people for the benefit of good rule in a state or country.

In his situation, it wouldn't be work.

Pres. Clinton has Secret Service protection. He's a multimillionaire. He has no children at home. I would venture to say he probably has hired help for housekeeping and cooking.

How much "work" would staying at home entail in his situation?

 

I do know he was up to Toronto book signing for what was to be an hour and he stayed on for three hours to be with the people and answer questions..Great bloke, in my mind.
