Can't see that it would even be noticed if we take out people with rebellious and wordly motives. There would be so few left that it wouldn't be a topic of conversation.

Being a fairly new Christian,5 years, God has taught me through scripture about adorning myself with Gold or costly apparel. I take God at his word and believe in HIS truths. I no longer wear expensive clothing, gold, earrings, or my nose ring.

In addition to the scriptures mentioned previously, I hold to this verse:

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:2)

My outward appearance has greatly changed since I was saved five years ago. Personally, my appearance affected my heart as well. What type of statements do I make by wearing a $300 gold chain? Or a nose ring? For one- the nose ring was more of a rebellious statement. Costly apparel-Gold- etc. instilled a material obsession within me (as it does with more people these days)and caused me to steal to get the very best.

Unfortunately, having a bigger house, fancier car, etc. does not bring you closer to God but farther in Debt! Then I had/still have the issue of being in debt to someone "Owe no one anything"(Romans 13:8).I am not saying that having these things are a sin but that my desires were not of the Lord.

Today I no longer "desire" to wear these things. But I desire daily to be a Godly example through my words, actions and appearance. I can honestly say that when I were a simple dress I do act different then when I wear Jeans but thats another discussion.

As a woman of God, "teacher of Good things"(Titus 2:3) I would rather spend my money on a Bible for someone that has not, or put gas in the car to go visit the sick, or buy tracts to share the Gospel with the Lost than to buy a new pair of earrings or an expensive outfit. What will count for eternity? "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2)

This is my personal experience and I thank the Lord for changing me into a new creature.

    Your sister in Christ,
    Ms.Lumi

I guess my question is why do we do these things?
    Or wear these things?

F.Y.I. it doesn't hurt to sneeze. Just blowing your nose! LOL

I am very simple. I choose my outfits wisely for two reasons:

    1. Cost
    2. Not to cause another to stumble
(whether it be man or woman)

    * A woman could desire the things that she cannot afford causing her to covet (Exodus 20:17) and a man could be led to sin by provactive clothing (Proverbs 6:25).

"My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold;" (Proverbs 8:19)

Thank you Jesus for my salvation!

    Your sister in Christ,

    Ms. Lumi,
Nice to meet you sister! It is nice to see another sister who takes these verses literally and is trying not to conform to this world.
I too do not wear gold or pearls or costly array. I agree that the money is better spent in other ways.
If you would like to pm me I would love that.

Well, as the daughter of a gemologist, I like jewelry. Now I don't have peirced eyebrows, lips or chin, but I do have peirced ears. I've read the scripture on peircing, and it has to do with a ritual for the dead, so it doesn't really apply as a reason in this day and age, at least that's not why I at the age of 11 did it.

I don't believe that appearance changes salvation or should it be dwelled on as being "the end all be all" of a person's faith either.

I'm not like Tammy Fae Bakker though...I don't go in for fake eyelashes and makeup that completely hides the face. I'm conservative by the world standards, and also by most church standards.

I understand the passages about adornments, and I do not go overboard, or underboard as some do. But I am a woman, and I like feminine things.

I don't think a woman has to wear sack cloth and ashes to show that she believes in God.

    In Christ,
    Laurenda

Let's have some clarification on the earrings for women. (Earrings on men are only found in reference to bondservants and men in Egypt, and don't try that junk that our Lord "came out of Egypt").

Does the size and length or even the shape have anything to do with worldliness, or spirituality? I've heard some earrings referred to as chandeliers, others as curtain rings, some being as long as 4" and others as big around as 8" in diameter.(That's 8" across for those who aren't sure what a diameter is.)

I'm not sure I understand just what you are saying. I can't see any clarification from what you said.

I have pierced ears and see nothing wrong with it. I usually wear studs. I can't imagine ANYONE wearing an earring 8" in diameter!

I know some women who do not believe in piercing their ears, but they will wear clip on earrings. What's the difference?

What I've heard about the length referring to them as chandeliers is associated with Vegas showgirls and the big 8" diameter earings are associated with the African tribal garb or even the hippie movement of the 60's. You black folks please don't anyone take offense.

Gaudiness is what I've understood by these examples. My personal opinion is my wife has these small diamond stud earings, I like them most and even in her ears at that!

I guess anything that really is strange to me is the tongue bob and the piercing just below the bottom lip as far as facial jewelry goes today.

    (YUKKK!)

Another is the earing hooked to a chain that extends to a nose ring. Anyone ever heard that is associated with demonic worship? or Gothic?

    Brother Ricky,
I am not personally offended by the "old barn," comment as I am probably younger than you. But, do you really think that Jesus would have referred to His mother as an old barn who needed painting?

Now Sister, you know I was only kidding, but comments like that do seem to get you ladies riled up a bit! Sometimes things need a little spicing up to get the full flavor out.

I apologize if anyone took my "old barn" comment any other way than in fun, I know yall ladies have plenty to say about us "old pigs" as well, at least Sister Francis Mote did! She had me make my introduction in "pig-Latin" one Sunday Morn! It was all in humour and we all had a big laugh! Oh, yeah, I forgot, people in church aren't supposed to laugh and be happy! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I know this was a 'tongue in cheek' statement Ricky and I took it as such. I HAVE heard lost people make the statement, however, that church people have no fun.

Who has more to laugh and be happy about than saved Christians? I don't think God saved us to go around looking like we've just dunked our head in a sour pickle keg! If we did that, surely no one would want to hear what we have to share!

As for myself, sometimes a point in a sermon given with humor, stays with me longer. God invented laughter and even told us it was good for us and acted like a medicine. I'm all for laughing and being happy. No matter WHERE I am!

For over fifty years, I attended a church which
taught the idea of no jewelery on the body, other
than watches. Now, it was all right to wear jewelry
on the clothing but not upon the body. Does this
    make any sense whatsoever?

It taught that the jewelry on the clothing should
not be costly, as diamonds and such. Yet it was
all right to wear fake diamonds. Reject our God's
artwork, apparently, but wear the fakes. Does this
    make sense?

My arm began to break out in a hideous rash from
wearing the watch. In an effort to comply with their
ridiculous rules, I bought several wristwatches,
tring to find one I could wear. After about 14
watches, I realized that I could wear one on a chain
and cure the rash on my wrist. They had a cow,
telling me I could not wear the watch other than on
a rope. Does this make sense?

We were not allowed to wear wedding rings. I
went through a lot of garbage as a young
wife, mother, and widow because of this -- men
who wanted dates, who accused me of being
ashamed of my marriage and/or husband or I would
wear a ring, calling me a liar and a fornictor, getting
dirty looks at the grocery store checkout counter,
and people assuming I was just living with men
when I was married. Great testimony for our God,
would you say? Does this make any sense?

I thnk that religious organizations get into real
trouble when tey add their ludicrous little rules to
the Word of God and raise those rules to a
religious level. If the Bible says, "Don't wear
jewelry," fine, then! Don't wear it! If it says, "Don't
wear makeup," fine -- don't wear it. But if it does
not say these things, they are not worthy of
discussion, except in the context of mentioning
the errors of the organizations and religious people.

i can see this, it seems to me to be a valid interpretation of this verse:

    In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Now, it was all right to wear jewelry

    this i don't understand.

    yes,

    In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

this verse seems to be prohibiting expensive adornment.

    this, too, i don't understand.

in this day and age, i'm suprised you had any trouble, when doug and gary hardly get a second look. maybe i need to live where you do, lol.

women wearing gold or expensive wedding rings as adornment is wrong, though:

    In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

I thnk that creligious organizations get into real

sure, but not all of this is just man-made rules.

If the Bible says, "Don't wear
jewelry," fine, then! Don't wear it! If it says, "Don't
wear makeup," fine -- don't wear it.

it says let your adornment be good works, not expensive external stuff. i guess i can see someone saying that cheap jewelry (or makeup) is fine, but since it ends with "with good works" instead of "with tin and brass" i think the interpretation prohibiting all all jewelry and make up, etc. is the best one. it's certainly not beyond the pale.

    I Pet 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

I will buy the argument that women shouldn't wear jewelry if you will buy the same argument that women shouldn't wear clothes. [IMG]

Abiyah, Certainly the area of jewelry needs discussing, so to clarify what the Word of God says. Notr to just put down or belittle those who go to extremes of not wearing, or only wearing certain jewelry. The arguement would go that many in the O.T. wore jewelry, so what's wrong with wearing it now?

The original post that started this thread was concerning ONLY facial jewelry and it's origin. Not much has beeen said in this area, but many have commented on OTHER jewelry.

The key to the wearing of jewelry to me is where those two words "costly array" are used. Also notice that plaiting the hair and gold are also referred to in the same context. Plaiting the hair is something that is unnatural. Gold was not the only precious metal jewelry was made, what about silver and then precious stones set in either? The context deals specifically with baudry and gaudiness, extravagance. Not overdoing it so that the jewelry steals all the attention and so the inner man can be seen.

Is it worth discussing for clarity's sake? Why, YES!

ok, you've convinced me - wait till i tell my family!

just kidding there [IMG] i don't see the problem - in context, we see the verse is talking only about adorning:

    1828 webster's:

ADORN', v.t. [L. adorno, ad and orno, to deck, or beautify, to dress, set off, extol, furnish.

    1. To deck or decorate; to make beautiful; to add to beauty by dress; to deck with external ornaments.

so, this verse prohibits apparel worn as adornment (that is, to make onself beautiful), not clothing worn for modesty or other reasons.

I see the same thing when I read both verses from Timothy and Peter that is has to do with adorning oneself on the outside. A Christian woman is to adorn herself with a gentle and quiet spirit. This is precious in the sight of God.

In the verse in Timothy is says gold, OR, pearls, OR, costly array. These are three different types of items.
