I cannot believe you left Ernest T. Bass out of the immediate options. He is my favorite though, right before the Darlings, Briscoe as my fav there.

I don;t watch them anymore though, they are included in my television abstinence.

    Shouldn't "Odus" be "Otis"?

I voted for Otis. I always thought it was hilarious that he would lock himself up, kind of like a naughty child who goes and sits in the corner 'cause he knows he's been naughty.

By the way, in "real life" I believe Otis was a Christian and was on Focus on the Family's Adventures in Oddessy radio program. He said he regretted being remembered only for his part as a "drunk" on the Andy Griffith show.

I only watch the B&W shows because Barney left after that. The combo of Andy and Barney was one funny comedy team.

I think heaven knew his heart...

It seems I read somewhere that Hal refused to do a drunken Otis in the Mayberry Reunion. Can anybody find a link?

It's true that he played the character of "Whit" on Adventures in Oddessy, but he also played "Owl" in the Winnie the Pooh cartoons and was one of the voices on the Scooby Doo cartoons. He was the guy who uttered those immortal words, "...and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those those meddling kids!"

For me, it was a toss-up between two characters...

Briscoe Darling, the man who used his hat to put water in the radiator of the truck and played several instruments on just a jug... lol

    and

Malcolm Merriweather, the bicycle riding englishman who worked for Andy and made a paper ladder for Opie.

Otis because he eventually did the voice of "Whit" on Adventures in Odessey when it first began.

Hal Smith did a lot of cartoon voices, but no one has mentioned one that I'm sure many of us, kids from the 60's and 70's, should remember. A hint: "I-I-I dooon't knooow, Daaaa-vey!"
