What is your favorite Star Trek series?
I chose the Next Generation. However, the orginal series has a sentimental place in my heart. I don't know if had grasped the idea of reruns back then. I would rush to watch the original every Thursday night. It was spellbinding.
But the voice and acting skill of Patrick Stewart was enough to convince me of the superiority of the NG.
In my preferential order:
The Original Series
The Next Generation
Animated Series (presume you mean from the early 70's?)
I've only seen a few DS9 episodes, but from what I understand from other fans it was supposed to be pretty good.
The Next Generation was such a wasted opportunity. If you take out all the stories with Wesley being the hero (most were in S1), all of the stories involving the holodeck (the writer's block salve), all of the stories involving Q, all of the stories with a more than obvious moral to the story (Star Trek Church, I called it at the time), and all of the politically correct stories, you are left with about two dozen stories.
Patrick Stewart is/was a fine actor. However, his character in TNG was too careful, too timid, favoring negotiations over actions. He's the sort of guy that, if discovering a spider in his house, would scoop it up and shoo it outside rather than squash it.
The show emphasized characters interaction with each other over action and dangerous situations.
I don't know anything of the program Enterprise.
I can see the point of your criticisms --especially the preponderance of PC in the show. But come on man --the Borg --the editions that featured that were reveting.
Yep, the Borg stories were great. So was the two-parter that ended one of the seasons, "The Best of Both Worlds". Most of the time travel stories were good. The Data stories were watchable.
But the constant use of the Holodeck as a plot device was tiresome. The godlike powers of Q was another lazy writer's way to write a story. Both of these plot devices might as well be like the end of the Wizard of Oz--"and then I woke up and it was all a dream." I can't think of a good story that featured Worf as the main character.
I check my TV Listings phone app on weekends looking at BBC America's ST TNG listings. It is rare that there is an episode that I want to watch again. So, like I said, there's a couple dozen stories that were very good to excellent. It just could have been so much better.
1. Next Generation
2. The Original Series
5. Voyager (currently watching)
The one that sticks in my mind is The Trouble With Tribbles!... That being said the progression of the whole series and the spin offs and of course the progression of the movies... To me it wasn't just Star Trek but what it opened up for the whole genre of Sci-Fi... Remember the start of the Original got the axe... The cry of the viewers brought it back!... How many directors of the Sci-Fi genre cut their teeth on Star Trek?... To many to name and if it wasn't for Star Trek to Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before would Sci-Fi even have got off the ground... btw when I first saw Star Trek Jeffery Hunter was the Captain!... I believe that was in the beginning!... Brother Glen
I only watched some of the next generation. Two good looking leads.
The original was the best.
