Now HCL....You really do not know this to be so. Please show scripture that says specifically that angels wear head-coverings. Not your interpretation.

I also feel this statement is way out of line!

To be modest is to be:

neither bold nor self-assertive : tending toward diffidence

observing the proprieties of dress and behavior; decent

limited in size, amount, or scope b : unpretentious

    Synonyms include being shy, chaste.

The word decent has its roots from Middle French/Latin and from words that meant to be fitting, to honor.

The archaic meaning of decent is to be appropriate, well-formed, handsome.

These days, when folks think of someone being modest, they think of conforming to standards of propriety, good taste, or morality.

Though I may disagree with HCL as to what a headcovering is (hair or an actual veiling), I do not believe she is unnecessarily drawing attention to herself by what she is doing. There is nothing inappropriate, of bad taste, or immoral about what she is wearing. It is not indecent nor pretentious.

Let's be real here for a moment, shall we? IF anyone is immodestly dressed, it is the woman who publicly reveals the body that belongs to her God and her husband. It is the woman who wears too much jewelry and makeup and is pretentious in her clothing choices.

God says we are to be a peculiar people! Yeah, peculiar folks often act, look, talk, live their lives differently than others, and this WILL draw attention.

Does this draw attention? You bet! Does it mean it is wrong? No way! Christ drew much attention to himself from the moment He began his ministry. Do we want to be calling our Lord and Saviour immodest?

Actually, John the Baptist dressed in camel hair! I'm sure this probably drew some stares! In fact, I'm sure the way he lived his entire life drew attention! Do we want to be calling him immodest???

Calling someone immodest because they are dressing or living a certain way that they believe is in line with scripture even though others may disagree with them is so wrong.

    Sherrie,
I am so glad that you asked for the Scripture reference. I did not say that the angels wear headcoverings, I said that the angels cover their glory when in the presence of God, at least the Seraphim do. Here it is:Isaiah 6:2.

    To the others about modesty,
I think Julia gave a wonderful answer about that one. [IMG]

In my personal experience there have been three types of attention that I have received since veiling my head all the time.

    1) Christian women began treating me mean and some even came up to me and told me I was wrong,(and other words), even before I told them what and why I was doing what I was doing. I have even had a few laugh and point at me.

    2) Men, Christian and non-Christian began treating me more gentlemanly. I have had men literally jump out of their seats to offer me theirs, carry boxes for me, rush to hold open doors, lower their music, apologize for cursing, etc. These things rarely happened before.

3)Unsaved began to approach me and ask for tracts ask me what I believe, what church I go to, ask me to pray for them, etc. These things never, ever happened before I veiled.

So, yes, the attention I get by the unsaved is wonderful! I would not ever go back to being unveiled and not having unsaved people approach me.

This is the way I personally see it: They (unsaved,) see the veil and think this person is serious about their religion. They stand out to me. I am hungry and thirsty, maybe this person knows where I can get something to fill that need.

I am in no way suggesting that anyone stop witnessing and wait for someone to ask them. But, frankly this has been a tremendous blessing to me to be asked what I believe.

Many times I have been able to give a complete gospel presentation because of these questions.

I had an opportunity to speak to my Pastor yesterday after the service. He explained that the passage says "hair" and that is what it means. And that the word it was translated from, also means hair.

With respect, I will concede to my Pastors knowledge and authority on this matter, and not question it further.

Thank you for your time however. Contrary to what I have read others say, I do not think that you have been anything but kind in regard to answering my questions on this matter.

Take Care, and God bless you,

I realize this is beating a dead horse, but with all due respect, I think everybody has missed the mark on this one.

Verse five does not allow for the covering mentioned to be the hair because a comparison is made. Being uncovered versus being shaved.

One possibility that hasn't been considered (at least I haven't seen it), is that the covering mentioned in I Cor 11 is a spiritual covering, not a physical one. With this in mind, in order for a man to pray or prophesy in public, he must not submitted in an unbiblical way to the spiritual authority of any other man, he must have a direct line to God. A woman, on the other hand, who prays or prophesies should be in proper submission to her husband or father.

When my wife and I were studying this out, we realized that the covering could not be the hair because of the comparison made in verse five, so we leaned toward Paul meaning a woman should have a veil on. One thing we didn't consider until later was that Paul could be referring to a spiritual covering (you can find this all through scripture).

    Just my .02.

    Did anyone see Oprah today?

The show was about "makeovers" and long hair.

8o) Perhaps you misunderstood my point. 8o)

No, I must not have been clear. There is no
command in the Law and the Prophets for women
to wear head coverings. These are merely examples
of what women did and what women wore. They
also wore robes, as did the men. The priests wore
head coverings, by our God's command, when they
prayed. The people wore underwear that went from
the neck to the knees, in most cases, and girdles
and loads of jewelry. I cannot see wearing what
they wore just because they wore it! 8o)

every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.

but every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head...

    ---

if 'covering' really only refers to hair all men should immedaitely shave their heads bald since that covering dishonors them.

No Betty, I forgot to watch it. But I know that Oprah doesn't think long hair on women over 40 is appropriate...she's said that many times before. My mother gets a laugh out of that, she's had hair past her waist all of my life. ;)

HCL, thank you, I appreciate that.

My mother's hair is long also and I have a 22 year old niece who has never cut her hair.

Well Oprah really doesn't have anything to do with this discussion, but I could not believe how much younger the women looked after their hair was cut. Oh, there was a man with long hair on the show also.

This is a very good point considering that it is also talking about authority.

Thank goodness he's talking about a spiritual covering, eh? My wife saw that, too, and I was ready to shave my head, and she was going to put on a veil. I've always wanted to shave my head anyway, but my wife won't let me.

    Abiyah,
I think we have come full circle in this discussion. I have given Scriptures from the Old Testament to show that women did indeed veil before Jesus' time

But, I lean upon what it says in 1 Corinthians 11 because the third verse in 1 Corinthians 1 says that these letters are for all Christians everywhere and everytime.

The veil has been torn down! We wear Jesus Christ now.

I am sorry but I agree with Abiyah. That was the custom of that time.

So were nose rings. I should really get me one.
