I dunno, because her husband asked her to? Remember, it is a positive statement saying that it is a glory to her. That does not mean that the negative reverse is true. In other words, just because it makes a positive affirmation, does not mean the reverse option is a negative.

It is a brave man indeed who tells his wife how to cut her hair, I am always nervous when my wife asks my opinion of hers. Concerning the affirmation not working in the negative I am not sure. I don't know if it applies but my mind is saying John 3:16 "whosever will" ofcourse to follow in the affirmative is eternal life but not to follow is eternal damnation.

Absolutely true, DD! I teach logic (adjunct professor of philosophy here in Casper) and find students jumping to conclusion based on what is NOT said!

Fact: Long hair is a glory
Falacy: Short hair (opposite) is not a glory

Actually, Paul is teaching a REAL opposite here:
Fact: Long hair on a woman is a glory
Fact: Long hair on a man is a shame

Do I hear any "Amens!"?? :D

So what is the opposite of glory?

And then why does it say in verse six that if a woman has shorn or shaved hair it is disgraceful?

Woman is the glory of man and her glory is her hair. I cannot fathom why any Christian man would ask his wife to cut off her God-given glory.

How about I turn the question around then? Why would a Christian man ask his wife to cut off what God calls her glory?

Murph, I think in passages that are not addressed in more than one fashion, my statement is true. If it is addressed (whoever does not believe has the wrath of God upon him), then we can be sure of it.

I have two boys. If I say that one of them is great at sports, that does not of necessity imply that the other isn't. It is only a positive statement upon one thing.

    1. You went where Paul did not.

    2. Because such a style would be trying to look like a male (military cuts and shaved heads just don't look right on women).

    3. Right, which is why the word literally means "long or neat". In other words, women may have shorter hair, but it must be done neatly. Long hair is not glory. Long hair that is neat is a glory to her. The same is true for shorter hair. The KJV translators just chose one definition.

    4. I have never told my wife to do anything with her hair. I have asked her if she would like to style it in a particular manner. If she does, she will no doubt pick a feminine style. My wife is gorgeous. If all her hair fell out, she would still be just as gorgeous. Her hair doesn't make or break her being my glory.

#8. When I became a fundamental Baptist, I asked my mentor, my adult Bible class teacher and his wife about this. They said pretty much the same thing you did.
#13 Thank you for pointing this out. I had two of my children in our churches Christian school, and it bankrupted us. (no exageration) We put them in public school because our tax dollars already pay for this, and it is a very good school. We can not afford to homeschool. We teach our children to be strong in their faith, and be seperated by their beliefs and faith. One of our children's teachers is a friend and fellow member of our church, and the other teacher is a Christian. ;)

I'll leave the pants for woman issue alone, as it is a non-issue as no one wore pants in Bible times.

</font>[/QUOTE]#2 I believe in that context it was a shame because a woman would only shave her head because of disease such as leprosy. Am I wrong?

#3 I thought a man's glory was his riches, and a woman's glory was her honor?

I am familiar with the passage that says a woman's hair is her crowning glory, but does not the Bible also say "strength and honor are her clothing" ? And " Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that
feareth the LORD, she shall be praised"? A woman's godliness can not be determined by how she wears her hair.

    In Christ,
    Laurenda

Possibly the next step to understanding this is to discuss what is meant by "her glory" while I like Dr. Bob's logic and I am in no means ready to fight on this issue I am still uncertain as to which opinion is correct. Does anyone have a thought about what the glory means.

I think it has to do with creation order. Verse 7 says that woman is the glory of man. "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God."

The uncovered male reflects God's supreme headship.

Glory is something that brings attention in my understanding. Like when we pray, "May God receive all the glory for this.." Glory belongs only to Him. Woman is the glory of man, the attention getter. Man is the glory of God.

Woman's hair is her glory, ask any beautician.

    Her hair is her Glory
    She is man's Glory
    Man is Christ's Glory
    Christ is God's Glory

Those are the things that I have come up with in my study on this issue.

To be shorn is to have cut hair and we all know what shaved is.

My hair is very fine and used to be thick, but now it is fine and thin. It does not look good long and it certainly is not neat. I think I have the most unmanageable hair in the world, but this is the hair that God gave me and I do the best I can with it.

As much time and money, I spend on it, it does seem to be important. :D

I know what the Bible says, but I think that our Lord God is more concerned with what is in my heart and in my actions than how my hair looks.

If a woman feels that she should wear her hair long, then do so. If she wants to cut it, then do so. And we will let it grow or cut it to please our husbands. ;)

I have to wear my hair cut short because I can't lift my arms to style it. In other words, it has to be wash and wear. Does this mean I'm not going to heaven?

    Looking up and hoping,

    Carol,
Are you disabled? The only way that one can get into heaven is by believing that the shed blood of Jesus Christ washes their sins away.

After a person is born again they begin to study God's Word to see what God has to say about ALL subjects.

Carol, this is the epitome of "legalism" - adding something to grace. And nobody here, no matter WHAT position they take on long hair, short hair or bald, is doing that!

God's grace is the only boat going to dock on heaven's shore! [IMG]

    Sister Carol, God will
cut you more slack than a gaggle of legalists.

You can't lift your arms to care for your
hair. So keep it short. Jesus understands
all about you and loves you anyway.
Legalists just want to put you down so
they can feel superior to you. If you are
trusting Jesus alone to get you to heaven,
He can do it. Obeying the (sometimes silly)
rules of legalists won't even get you through
    the hour's duress.

Father God, Sir, please watch after Sister
Carol and lend her all your best blessings
even though she is in dire straits. [IMG] Amen.

It is rebellion against a church, at times, when
people get fed up with the rules they add to the
Bible, but certain ones of such rebels are in good
company. Did not our Lord rebel agaist the
rules the Pharisees added to the Law? Did He
not call them hypocrites and graves full of dead
bones? And did He not then say that the
righteousness that catches the eyes of our God
must exceed theirs? Their righteousness was
all caught up in human rules and human attempts
to improve upon salvation; our God's
righteousness is His and His alone, not ours.

Back to the question of the word Glory and what it means...I looked it up in my Bible dictionary and will share what I've found, in hopes that it will illuminate this issue a little.

    Glory of men:
    1. their power, reputation, or importance; of God
    2. the manifestation of this essential character or qualities.
    3. his brightness or visible splendor.
    Glory in the O.T.:
The KJV renders 25 Hebrew words "glory". The basic O.T. term, kabod, means "heavy", thus weighty or important. Riches (Ps. 49:16) may be sources of reputation (Phil 2:29) may be sources of glory in human society. Yet the true importance of humankind is found in the fact that God gave man his own image and dominion over creation, thus crowning humanity with glory and honor (Ps. 8:5)

    God's glory in the N.T.:
According to the NT, God's glory (Gk, doxa) is dispayed in his manifestation of himself in Jesus Christ.

To read on of the passage that HCL offered; 1Cor. 11:15 says:" But if a woman have long hair it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering." The only description that seems to apply to this passage is "important" because her hair is given as a covering. In an earlier scripture 1 Cor. 11:10 says: For this cause ought the woman to have power over her head because of the angels. My Bible gives a refference for the word "power" as meaning a symbol of authority.

Does this make anything more clear? I'm still not getting the jist of it. Could anyone offer further explanations, for example why does a woman need to have authority because of the angels? And why does she need to be covered?

    God Bless You,
    Charlotte

Thank you Charlotte for posting that. I have been blessed to read what you have typed out. It is good to study this issue over and over. Because it is vital that a woman not only be in her proper place but also wear the symbol that she is. I tremble as I type here, because I am certainly not perfect at being under my husband.

A wise pastor who teaches that women ought to cover their heads said that when he was searching for the truth about this issue he wondered why the prayers of the uncovered were answered if it was so important for women to cover their heads. He thought why bother if their prayers are answered as well as the covered.

He then realized that prayers are answered by faith not the covering. But, when women used to cover their heads there was much more order in the homes and the churches. He said, "What happens when the veil comes of the head of the Christian woman?"

The answer: LOOK AROUND AMERICA! Look at the homes.

Back to the subject of glory,in my Vines Expository Dictionary: 1 Cor 11:7, "Of man representing the authority of God, and of woman rendering conspicuous the authority of man."

I like the definitions you have for glory, I cannot find the one that goes exactly with the hair one, though, maybe someone else has that one.

But, in Charles Ryries commentary of the passage it says, "The man is the head of the woman, This teaching is based on Gen 3:16, and Paul makes it the basis for the wearing of the covering. Woman ought to be veiled and covered in the meeting of the church, and men should not. Paul's reasons were based on theology, (headship v.3), the order of creation (vv.7-9), AND THE PRESENCE OF THE ANGELS in the meeting (v.10).

None of the reasons was based on contemporary social custom. In the light of what he says in 14:34-35, it is doubtful that Paul approved of those activities by the women at Corinth. He simply acknowledges that these were unauthorized practices. Shaved, a sign of disgrace.

11:8-9, Woman came from man's body and WAS MADE FOR THE SAKE OF THE MAN. (Gen 2:22) 11:10, a symbol, the covering is the sign of the man's authority over the woman, because of the angels.

The INSUBORDINATION of an UNcovered woman (signifying her refusal to resognize the authority of her husband) WOULD OFFEND THE ANGELS who observe the conduct of believers in the church gathering (Eph 3:10, 1 Peter 1:12)

11:15, This is not the same word as that used in verses 5-6. The point here is that the hair represents the proper covering in the natural realm, so the veil is the proper covering in the religous.

11:16, no custom of women worshiping without some form of a covering."

I have a bit more to share about the glory:

    God- wants His glory revealed.

Man- Glory of God, let it be seen.

Woman- Man's glory, should his glory be flaunted in front of a Holy God?

Woman's hair-her glory, should not be flaunted in front of a Holy God. Man's glory is as filthy rags next to a Holy God. Let His glory shine, cover the head in the presence of a Perfect God.
