Dwayne, I have DSL, which does not filter data. However, you can purchase internet filtering software from most software suppliers.

Don't let your guard down if you have kids just because you have a "filter" there is really no way to get rid of all of the objectional content on the internet.
To be honest though...you really have to look for things on the internet...I use the internet probably in excess of 30 hours a week and I think only twice in my life have a mistakenly gotten onto a site that I didn't intend to. The internet is some ways is much better than a TV though because things aren't constatly thrown at you.
However, if you have a 14 year old that wants to find something...no amount of filtering software will block it.

Im going to have to side with Dale on this one. All filtering technologies use similar software at least in concept to virus scan programs. There are many many ways to spoof dns names and get around a filters block list, and also plenty of ways to hide content from even keyword and behavioral engines designed to figure out what is being sent from a site. I have not used Cleaninter.net, but I have tested a few others, Bess, AOL has a version (don't recommend it) and I would agree with you that it probably won't let you on most sites that would be objectionable, but it will not filter out 100% of the offensive content if it happens to exist on a site that is not blocked. In the old battle between armour and weapons, someone always figures out how to make a weapon that can get through the armour, no matter how thick it is.

You can rest much easier with a filter, but you should still have a program that logs usage and allows you to view specifically what has been downloaded and viewed.

Thanks for the info and comments. What if the person wanting the filter is the only one with access to the computer & he's the one having problems with certain sites?

A filter will not solve the problem you are talking about. Since there is always a way to turn off a filter program, or use a non-filtered isp. It will however require a more determined effort to get oneself in trouble.

This issue is one that I don't think should be attempted to be overcome alone. It is much more effective to be accountable to someone else. I have a couple guys who are prayer/accountability partners with me, and the internet is an issue that we regularly check up on each other about. I know some guys that actually taught their wives how to search the history on their browser, or installed a program that checks out internet usage, so they couldn't hide anything from them. Anything that allows you to feel as if someone is watching or could see what you are seeing.

Bottom line is, not only does God know our thoughts and intents, as well as what we view, but everything we do online is logged somewhere, and it is not as anonymous as everyone thinks. There is always a record of sites visited, images viewed, etc. It may help to simply be reminded of that fact on a regular basis.

What OS and browser are you using? IE 6.0 with the latest update allows you to block certain sites. Go to: [Tools], [Internet Options], click the [Content] tab, at the top under "Content Advisory" click [Enable] then click the "Approved Sites" tab, type in the address of the site you wish to block and click [Never]. Click [OK] all the way out and you're done.

Or, do the same thing up to the point of clicking [Enable] under the "Content Advisory" but stay on (or click) the "Ratings" tab instead of "Approved Sites". Adjust as needed and click "Apply" then "OK" your way out.

Will it allow you to download peer to peer file shareing programs? Try to download bear share and test that..first if it allows you to download it and then if it blocks anything.
Again, if it is for yourself, you can always turn it off...if it is for your kids they can get around it.
THe iMac at our house is out in the open so that people are always around.
I am not meaning to argue...it is just that I am young and I know how computers work and I know that many people are uneducated and may be blindsided.
