EBT system craters across 17 states

Today, the EBT system crashed hard, causing food stamp beneficiaries across 17 states to be unable to buy their cupcakes, donuts, diet sodas and other junk foods that keep them diseased and obese. (Yes, food stamp money is primarily used buy processed junk food.)

"While the system is now up and running, beneficiaries in the 17 affected states continue to experience connectivity issues to access their benefits," stated a food stamp official in an AP story. The story goes on to say, "Typically when the cards aren't working retailers can call a backup phone number to find out how much money a customer has available in their account. But that information also was unavailable because of the outage, so customers weren't able to use their cards."

The feds said this was due to a "system update," but this is of course a lie. Then again, every computer system in government that crashes -- including the Healthcare.gov website -- is now said to be "fully functioning" as if everybody in government is tripped out on acid.

The IT backbone of the U.S. federal empire is unraveling

Today's failure of the EBT card system is yet more evidence that the U.S. empire is rapidly falling apart. The disastrous launch of Healthcare.gov proved yet again that the Obama administration is utterly incapable of competently managing a simple R&D development project. And rather than trying to help Americans become more independent and self-reliant, Obama has worked hard to put as many people on social welfare programs as possible, vastly expanding the role of government to the point where millions of Americans no longer have any concept of having a job or supporting themselves.

As an example of this, AP quotes a cashier named Eliza Shook who said, "It's been terrible. It's just been some angry folks. That's what a lot of folks depend on."

And that's true. Without EBT cards, millions of Americans have no way to feed themselves. They depend entirely on government just to put food on the table. So when that government fails them, they panic.

This is why I have long held that the day America collapses into chaos is the day when EBT cards go offline and stay offline for 72 hours. Technically, that's three days, of course, but you get my point.

Even with no income and having to rely on food stamps, one can be careful in their purchasing, stocking and cooking - so that they always have a week's worth of food in the house for cases such as this. Yes, they will have to plan, not spend the money on ridiculous purchases and just maybe eat rice and beans a few times but hey, entire nations live on rice and beans and do just fine.

Stigma associated with the SNAP (food stamp) program has led to several common misconceptions about how the program works and who receives the benefits. For instance, many Americans believe that the majority of SNAP benefits go towards people who could be working. In fact, more than half of SNAP recipients are children or the elderly. For the remaining working-age individuals, many of them are currently employed. At least forty percent of all SNAP beneficiaries live in a household with earnings. At the same time, the majority of SNAP households do not receive cash welfare benefits (around 10% receive cash welfare), with increasing numbers of SNAP beneficiaries obtaining their primary source of income from employment.

I hope you have a secure place to keep your pets because when the beans and rice run out they'll be next on the menu.

Right, the working poor. I get it. Socialists do so love to use the poor people they've helped create as examples to justify the need to steal even more bread out of their mouths because we all have to take care of the poor who can't feed themselves.

What do you think is creating all these working poor people? It wouldn't have anything to do with outsourcing our jobs to other countries and using govt force to mandate the purchase of products people can't afford while their employers cut their hours to avoid being put out of business all together by big government laws no one can fully comprehend and the big govt itself can't even figure out how to implement.

    Would it?

Correct me if I am wrong Crabby but Jesus was speaking to individuals in that passage not the government right? Can you show me a passage of scripture where in Jesus advocated the use of govt force to confiscate property from individuals for the greater good?

That is correct not the government. If course he will not respond to that. Never does. But he may try to redirect.

Yet any of us, if our ATM cards stopped letting us access money to make purchases(food, gas, etc.) would probably respond the same way.

Very true CBT. But herein lies the problem. God has never intended for the government and its social programs to take care of the poor. He left the CHURCH to do that but we've let the government usurp that authority and now we don't want the government the extend farther it's reach of doing what the CHURCH has failed, or in many instances refused to do.

An answer that any good Pharisee in Jesus' time would be proud of. Very legalistic justification of unconcern for those in need.

I believe God looks on the heart and the heart of many who call themselves Christian have no heart for the poor, the sick those in need. It shows in the attitude of people in what they post about helping those in need. Zaac, I see the problem as not between government and church, but in the lack of sympathy and empathy in the hearts of people.

I'll take that as a no. You can't find a passage of scripture where in Jesus advocates using govt force to confiscate property from individuals for the greater good.

God looks on the heart. Pharisees look for legalistic excuses.

Do you see any scripture supporting democracy?

Do you see any scripture supporting mental hospitals?

Do you see any scripture supporting hospitals?

Do you see any scripture supporting inoculations?

Do you see any scripture supporting a tax deduction for contributions to charity?

Do you see any scripture supporting tax deductions for capital losses?

Such a legalistic list could go on forever and forever.

I certainly wouldn't panic and cry that my family would starve (I heard this from some on the news). I carefully stock food for my family and while I've not had to rely on food stamps, I've had to be careful with our money and have had weeks where we have not gotten paid. But we have at least 2-3 weeks of food readily available and I'm sure I could go longer than that if we got creative.

But that's what I mean CBT. All we ever hear from one side is how the government wants to socialize everything. Yet it's rare to hear the same folks in the church talking about anything significant that they are doing so that the government doesn't have to.

And I 'm sure that you've got some folks on food stamps who have already done some of the things of which yall speak. But the story seems to be speaking to the overall mood of folks on food stamps as panic.

And I think the mood would be the exact same if access to money from ATMs for food and gas were hindered in the general population.

All one need do is look to how the folks in Cyprus responded when the ATMs stopped giving money.

Who's a socialist? I'm a Christian who supports helping the poor. That desire comes from my faith. I would rather spend my tax money that way instead of on worthless wars of aggression like Viet Nam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Perhaps you'd rather bring back debtor's prisons or simply let them die in the streets. You have your beliefs and I have mine.
