    This morning at Japanese Baptist we sang a hymn (Sambika #506, "Taenaru ai kana") that purports to be a translation of "For God so loved! O wondrous thought" by Daniel Webster Whittle, to a tune called "Glory to God" by James McGranahan. Whittle and McGranahan are both well known to me, but I have never heard this one, and neither the Cyber Hymnal nor Google turns it up. Anybody have any idea what the English text is?

    I looked it up and could not find it. I sang the tune you scanned, and sorry to say, I hadn't heard it before.

    So, I am of no help, but I just wanted you to know that I tried! [IMG]

    The folks [specifically, masato sakurai, their resident Japanese guy] at the Mudcat Café (a "secular" source of vast value to those who love American folk- and gospel- and fasola- hymnody) came through! The Sambika folks got the incipit wrong: it's "For God so loved! O wondrous theme", and the full text is in this thread (click)! But thanks for trying, Scott and Joshua!

    What glorious words! THANK YOU!

    GLORY TO GOD THE FATHER
    James McGranahan

    For God so loved! - Oh, wondrous theme!
    Oh! wondrous key to wondrous scheme!
    A Saviour sent to sinful men - Glory to God the Father!

    CHORUS:
    Glory to God the Father!
    Glory to God the Father!
    Glory, Glory, Glory to God the Father!

    In love God gave, in love Christ came,
    That man might know the Father's name,
    And in the Son salvation claim - Glory to God the Father!

    As man He tarried here below
    The pow'r and love of God to show;
    To help and heal all human woe - Glory to God the Father!

    Upon the cross His life He gave,
    His people from their sins to save;
    For them descended to the grave - Glory to God the Father!

    By God exalted from the dead,
    He reigns on high the living head
    Of ev'ry soul for whom He bled - Glory to God the Father!

    And you call P&W repetitive? So this is a 7-11 song, right?

    7-11 songs do not normally have 5 verses that have meat, then a simple chorus line that gives glory to God. So don't think that qualifies!

    But it is a praise/worship type song with a little more than average meat on the bones.

    You're entirely welcome, Dr Bob. However, I must point out that you suggest McGranahan wrote the words, whereas he actually composed the tune. Daniel W. Whittle (aka "El Nathan"), author of a number of other well-known gospel hymns of that era ( (click for bio/songlist)), actually wrote the text.
