    Hey FTR:

Though I disagree with you on your assessment, I respect your opinion, and am always interested in your viewpoint.

Hope all is well with you down there,

I fear that Fred Thompson would be George W. Bush with a deeper voice. We've had 8 years of that style of presidency and there is no way that I will vote in 2008 to continue liberal Republicanism in the White House.

    Hey now: WHOA!
Neither one of them are liberals. GWB is a Neoconservative. I don't know enough about Thompson, but GWB is not a liberal.

    Regards,

A neo-"conservative" is a liberal with a hawkish foreign policy. Just look at how the federal government has grown domestically during George W. Bush's presidency. There is no other way to describe it except for calling it liberal if the word means anything at all.

An advocate of big government is by no means a test for being a liberal. The Neoconservatives make that abundantly clear. Do you really think that W is a liberal?

Yes. Anyone who increases the size and reach of government is a liberal.

    Trust me, it isn't.
I am a liberal, and proud of it. W is NOT a liberal - not even close.

    Neoconservatism, as defined by wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism

Here's a link to "conservapedia" on the Neoconservatives.

    http://www.conservapedia.com/Neoconservatism

 <------ that is me laughing at "conservapedia" - what a joke!

Hope all is well by the way - wish I could've gotten to El Dorado and taken you up on that cup of coffee!!

BiR (who is actually going to DC on business for a few days tomorrow)

People love to label someone as "liberal." It's an insane hobby. Golf is much better

Thompson is no Bush. Bush on his best day isn't Fred. Not even close.

Well, let's see what a self-described neo-"conservative" at AEI has to say:

"Let me explain first what neoconservatism means. We neocons were a small group of political thinkers who broke with fellow liberals during the war in Vietnam. Most liberals came to believe that the US got into Vietnam because of what President Jimmy Carter later called an "inordinate fear of communism". By contrast, neocons held to the conviction that communism was a monstrous evil and a potent danger. For our obstinacy, we were drummed out of the liberal camp and dubbed "neoconservatives". "

What do self-described conservatives find so appealing about Fred Thompson other than their dissatisfaction with Romney, McCain, and Giuliani?

Yeah, let's just ignore that neo-"conservatives" describe themselves as hawkish liberals as my post just above this one shows.

Amen to that, brother. Bush has proved himself a linguini-spined liberal.

What do I like about Fred? Well, he's consistently pro-life. He helped Lamar Alexander clean up a very corrupt govt in Tennessee in the early 80s. He voted to kill the NEA. Strong on taxes. Good on economy and defense also. My big problems are he voted to continue the relaxed atmosphere at gun shows (some consider that to be strongly 2nd amendment) and he voted against allowing reimportation of drugs from Canada.

Didn't he support McCain-Feingold? Isn't he assoicated with AEI? Now if he was associated with Heritage I would understand but to be associated with AEI and claim to be a true blue conservative? Come on.

You love the AEI well-poisoning thing, don't you?

Yes, he voted for McCain-Feingold, and I mentioned that is a problem I have with him. Overall, his positives outweigh his negatives. I'm not sold on him yet, but he's head and shoulders above the pseudo-conservatives in the race thus far.

Maybe so but he will never reach the stature of the real deal - Congressman Ron Paul of Texas.

Hey, if he is going to lend his name and reputation to AEI then he will have to deal with the consequences. He has no one to blame but himself.

Actually, Ron Paul is the real deal when it comes to limited, constitutional government as he is a libertarian. Conservatives can't claim that as they are generally lacking in the area of defense of personal freedom just as liberals are generally lacking in the area of defense of economic freedom.

If the personal freedom old ronnie wants is to use drugs that destroy whole societies then he is a liberal not a conservative.

Please show us where this is a plank in the liberal platform.

Using your argument, the same could be said for tobacco and alcohol. Are we ready to outlaw them as well?
