Since many of the States make it so easy to gamble with the lottery (the lure of winning big bucks), some Christians are jumping on the bandwagon and justify themselves when purchasisng a ticket by saying, "The Lord can use that money." What is your take on this, and why? Chapter and verse please! [IMG]

Ps 24:1 The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

So if it all belongs to God anyway who are we to 'win' it for God. Plus the obvious down side of any gambleing being a loosing proposition. It (gambeling, lottery) is classic poor stewardship of the finacial resources God gives us.

    edit for bad spelling.

    "LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF"

gampling depends on losers. When you support gambling, you are literally wishing a LOT of people lose a LOT of money so you can get it.

"Thou shalt not covet" rings a bell, too.

And then, of course, there is the entire Sermon on the Mount -- you know, the stuff about trusting God with everything... [IMG]

And, finally, I would ask folks to remember Moses and the tabernacle if they are tempted to gamble 'for the Lord.' When the Lord wanted something done, He inspired people's hearts to give so much Moses asked them to stop. I don't think the Lord needs any financial help...

By the way, when you 'bumped' Brian, does that mean you approve or disapprove of what he said???

    Hi,
I don't buy lotto tickets because I have this small quite voice inside of me that says "no". So I don't. I also get this help when my husband watches most TV programs. As for Chapter and verse... I think that is the point exactaly. Who has time to watch TV or buy a lotto ticket when they are reading the word or have their head bowed in prayer. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phil.4:8
Why would anyone think about buying a loto ticket? What is it's virtue? When the Good Lord sends me a small quite voice through the Holy Spirit, I listen.

After the fall, God gave man the challenge of working with the sweat of his brow to provide his needs. That work ethic is continued in the NT. A couple of verses might address the matter of gambling.

    * Eph 4:28 - "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour...." - God commands work (labour) means to work to the point of being tired. The verse goes on to say this is God's means of providing our needs, not winning the lottery.

    * II Thes 3:8,10, 11 - This whole passage teaches the means of providing for ourselves is work and idleness (winning the lottery probably means quitting work and sitting around) is condemned. This passage also makes it clear that God's will is for man to work to provide his needs.

Gambling is a shortcut to God's fruit of labor. There are no shortcuts in the will of God. Thus one reaon why gambling is wrong is that it takes man away from his god-given means of supporting himself and his family by working to keep himself occupied and out of trouble. ;)

    Keep in the Word!!
