    25,000 chickens culled after bird flu detected in Dutch farm printResizeButton();
Dutch Ministry of Agriculture officials began culling 25,000 chickens at a farm in the province of Gelderland on Wednesday morning after a mild form of bird flu was detected there, Dutch news agency ANP reported

What about chickens. I see they kill whole farms full of chickens where bird flu if found. Do we care about chickens as much as dogs or are they not as cute.

The vast majority of chickens are not pets, they are food or produce food in the form of eggs.

Dogs also aren't susceptible to a disease that has the potential to become a human pandemic like chickens are.

So we only care about pets. Not other animals. How about giraffes, if we killed of several hundred giraffes would we have a pettition to sign.

Rabies. That is the reason they are killing the dogs three people have died including one four yearold girl. And several hundered people bitten by dogs in that village.

Giraffes are not generally human food.

Again, dogs are not susceptible to a disease that could be a human pandemic that could kill tens of millions of human beings.

There is no danger that tens of millions of human beings will die from rabies.

So how many human beings are worth how many dogs. If four people die including a four year old girl then its not worth killing dogs. But if 10,000 people could die then it is worth it.

Also I dont understand your animal importance hierarchy. Pets then non food animals then chickens. So a dog is most important then a girraff then a chicken last. Why?

I think if you could save ONE human life by killing every dog in a village then you should. But that is just me.

I think that only dogs that are a threat should be executed.

I've been round and round on this subject with several people on this board in the past few years. None of our conversations has ever produced any movement from our original position by any of us. So I doubt there will be any movement this time.

I've enjoyed the debate. Have a good night's sleep. :)

I can see what deejay is saying. PETA did nothing against China with all its human rights abuses but when animal abuse came to light then they acted.

But to kind of play the devil's advocate here... I am sure I've seen statistics somewhere that show that people who abuse animals generally work they way up to abusing people. It is kind of a natural degression.

So in defence of those who solely fight for animal rights, perhaps they are partially effective in preventing human rights abuses also.

I have seen kids who were cruel to small animals when they were 8, 9, and 10 years old. Nothing was done to stop them and by the time they were 14 or 15 they were doing to other kids what they once did to animals.

Cruelty to animals is wrong, but it is a matter of priority.

(Having said that, a friend of mine and I have set up an exclusive organisation - The RSPCC - The Royal Society for the Promotion of Cruelty to Cats... :) )

China is one of the few industrialized nations left in the world that executes humans.

If that's the case, why would anyone be surprised that they have no scruples about killing dogs?

That's what I used to hear in SoCal. So what if the kid dies or a cop dies - animals have equal rights . . . .

Oh well - I think I may have to agree with Ken on this one . . .

I think it is better to err on the side of protecting humans.

    IMHO

If you think it is better to err on the side of protecting humans... then you agree with me. The post of mine you quoted was me questioning Kens logic in previous posts.

I am for killing the dogs to prevent the further spread of rabies. My only consern is that the dogs should be killed in a humain way. The artical reports the dogs are beaten to death. I have my doubts that this is accurate as 50,000 dogs were killed in 5 days. That is alot of beating and very unefficeant.

Now I cannot be certain about all of Asia - it is big. And I think you are right that 50,000 are a lot. But, if you mobilize all of the cops in the area and they beat 10 a piece . . . Or if a bunch were pups . . . or they were breading dogs to eat - just go through the cages and beat them in the head.

I think dog meat is legal in China along with Horse . . .
