Even thought they won the superbowl, do you thing that the NY Giants are the best team in the NFL right now?

They were the best team Sunday night. That's all I can say. I still think the Patriots are the better all-around team, and the respective records reflect that.

The Pats, however, couldn't get it done when it counted.

Yes, with the bolded italic phrases being the operative phrases. You can't deny what the Giants did these last few weeks. They played great as a team, not only in the Super Bowl, but also in the playoffs and near the end of the season. They weren't the best team at the beginning of the season nor in the middle, nor even at Week 14 or so, but they were the best when it counted.

The Patriots were wildly overrated. I think healthy Colts and Charges teams are on par with the Pats talent-wise.

Early in the year the Patriots blew other teams away. Later in the season they began to have some close calls including with the Eagles and with the Giants.

When you are better than everyone else, other teams begin to make adjustments to try to beat you. Since you are better, you tend not to adjust. Eventually someone comes up and beats you because they change and you don't. It's the nature of the beast.

The Patriots were a great team this year, perhaps the best ever. But, in the end, they were not perfect.

Excellent point, swaim. This is a big part of the reason why it's so hard for teams to win repeat championships.

If the Giants had played like the giants play, they would not have beaten Dallas or Green Bay. This will be borne out next season.

I am very happy for the Manning Bro.s, though.

Do you mean that if they had played in the playoffs like they played in weeks 1-16 they wouldn't have won? If that had been the case, they wouldn't have beaten Tampa Bay.

    Maybe, maybe not.

We have all said the mark of a great team is championships. Now the Giants have theirs and now everyone wants to say regardless of the loss the pats are a better team.

Shouldnt winning when it matters count for something? Or doing what it takes to win? The Giants did this not just once or twice, but FOUR times they traveled to hostile areas and beat everyone they came up against.

The pats did not lose the game, the Giants WON the game. And no one is willing to give them credit.

So I say YES the Giants are the best team in the NFL regardless of the record. Why? Because they did what needed to be done and won when no one gave them a chance.

Ask the cowboys if they had a choice which would they choose.

13 players in the pro-bowl or a Super bowl trophy?

They are the Champs no doubt, and no one can take that away from them. But the best team does not always win the trophy at the end.

But are they the "better" team? Well if you look at their overall record compared to the Pats? No. They played each other 2 times this year and their record was 1-1. So it seems they are both pretty good teams.

That is the reason that I don't care if the NCAA has a play off system or not in collage ball. Folks will still say< I know they won but they aren't the best team or if they played 7 games they wouldn't have won. Who knows, but we do know that no matter how high a bird flies a hammer should break glass.

Even in systems designed to show who the best team is, like the NBA playoffs, you'll still find people that say that the winner of a particular series wasn't the best team.

Going off the top of my head, back in the 40's Washington beat the Bears in the season but the Bears layed it on Washington 70 or so to zip I believe. The Bears were the Champs, so in my book they were the best that year as the Colts were the best last year and New York is the best this year. I guess I have to much baseball in me, so I know that what looks the best on paper don't always win. I take the winner as the best.

The last team to be best on paper and to win was the '72 Dolphins. Going 17-0 they were the #1 offense and the #1 defense that year. They not only won the Super Bowl but they also won their 1st game of '73. Which made them equal with all 18 game winners and had they not lost their 2nd game that year they would have been 19-0. Alas they are tied with all the great teams that have recorded 18-1 win streaks.

The NY Giants are the best team of 2007. They took home the final trophy.

True. That's why I think the notion that a playoff will end "controversy" and "fun water cooler talk" is a bromide. Precisely because, as Bob Alkire said:
There will always be discussion of what could've, should've or might've happened.

NCAA football is different. There are over 100 teams in Div I-A (I hate calling it FBS). You could have a four-team playoff without much controversy. Often the current system boils down to picking one 11-1 team over another 11-1 team.
