I love operetta and the works of G&S. Grew up humming the tunes from
HMS Pinafore (Lord high executioner), Pirates of Penzance (Modern Major General), Mikado (three little maids from Seoul).

Any others humming as you read?

    Just humming???

It's how I learned to READ! My grandfather ran away from his home in England in the late 1800's, and came to America. Many years later (obviously, I hope!), I was a four-year-old sitting on my beloved Papa's lap watching as his fingers underlined the words to the entire scores of Pirates, and Iolanthe, and Pinafore and so many others as they played on our old record player. By the time I was seven, I was trying to organize the kids in the neighborhood into a production of Iolanthe!

    Didn't work.... :D

I can still do the patter song from Iolanthe by heart -- you know, the "Nightmare song". Also "Modern Major General" from Pirates and "John Wellington Wells" from Sorcerer.

You got me sitting here singing my father's favorite from Pirates:

    Poor, wand'ring one,
    Though thou hast surely strayed,
    Take heart of grace
    Thy steps retrace!
    Poor wand'ring one..."

Just humming? Not on your life!

Oh my. Helen, I am 55 years old and have been saying Seoul (rhyme with school) since a tot!

Have it playing on my laptop as I type and, even with impaired hearing, they are saying SCHOOL!

    Ever feel DUM?

    Poor Wandering One
When the Foeman Bares his Steel

    GOTTA LEARN THE WORDS!! :D

When a felon's not engaged in his employment
Or maturing his felonious little plans,
    His capacity for innocent enjoyment
Is just as great as any honest man's . . .

    Love G & S! [IMG]

    Original lyrics by W.S. Gilbert:

When a felon's not engaged in his employment (his employment)
Or maturing his felonious little plans (little plans)
His capacity for innocent enjoyment ('cent enjoyment)
Is just as great as any honest man's (honest man's)

Our feelings we with difficulty smother ('culty smother)
When constabulary duty's to be done (to be done)
Take one consideration with another (with another)
A policeman's lot is not a happy one.

    Ah!
When constabulary duty's to be done, to be done,
A policeman's lot is not a happy one.

When the enterprising burglar's not a-burgling (not a-burgling)
When the cutthroat isn't occupied in crime ('pied in crime)
He loves to hear the little brook a-gurgling (brook a-gurgling)
And listen to the merry villiage chime (villiage chime)

When the 'coster's finished jumping on his mother (on his mother)
He loves to lie a-basking in the sun (in the sun)
Take one consideration with another (with another)
A policeman's lot is not a happy one.

    Ah!
When constabulary duty's to be done, to be done,
A policeman's lot is not a happy one.

Now have fun Dr. Bob! LOL

    SONG--FREDERIC
    FREDERIC:

Oh, is there not one maiden breast
Which does not feel the moral beauty
    Of making worldly interest
    Subordinate to sense of duty?

Who would not give up willingly
    All matrimonial ambition,
To rescue such a one as I
    From his unfortunate position?
    From his position,
To rescue such an one as I
    From his unfortunate position?

    GIRLS:
Alas! there's not one maiden breast
Which seems to feel the moral beauty
    Of making worldly interest
    Subordinate to sense of duty!

    FREDERIC:
Oh, is there not one maiden here
Whose homely face and bad complexion
Have caused all hope to disappear
    Of ever winning man's affection?
Of such a one, if such there be,
I swear by Heaven's arch above you,
If you will cast your eyes on me,
However plain you be, I'll love you,
    However plain you be,
If you will cast your eyes on me,
However plain you be I'll love you,
I'll love you, I'll love, I'll love you!

    GIRLS:
Alas! there's not one maiden here
Whose homely face and bad complexion
Have caused all hope to disappear
    Of ever winning man's affection!

    FREDERIC:
    (in despair) Not one?
    GIRLS:
    No, no -- not one!
    FREDERIC:
    Not one?
    GIRLS:
    No, no!
    MABEL:
    (enters through arch) Yes, one!
    Yes, one!
    GIRLS:
    'Tis Mabel!
    MABEL:
    Yes, 'tis Mabel!

    RECIT--MABEL
    MABEL:

Oh, sisters, deaf to pity's name,
    For shame!
It's true that he has gone astray,
    But pray
Is that a reason good and true
    Why you
Should all be deaf to pity's name?

    GIRLS:
(aside): The question is, had he not been
    A thing of beauty,
Would she be swayed by quite as keen
    A sense of duty?

    MABEL:
For shame, for shame, for shame!

    LOL..for you Dr. Bob!

Looking for websites with words for G&S AND for great opera.

On the opera thread I commented about "Pilgrims Chorus" (I think that's it; maybe "Soldiers Chorus") from Tanhauser. Cannot find words in English.

    Hep me, Rhonda!

Oh wait, that's the favorite BEACH BOYS thread . .

    There's a difference?? ;)

Anyone here familiar with the Xena-cum-G&S parody, "Heroine Barbarian"? Kelly, if you aren't, you should be.

How did your new bride feel about you running off with the gal Mini? Bet she was not singing G&S!

Unless it was "the Lord High Executioner!"
