And he thinks the president and the Congress should say so:

' Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president....
Gingrich said in the coming days he plans to speak out publicly, and to the Administration, about the need to recognize that America is in World War III.

He lists wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, this week's bomb attacks in India, North Korean nuclear threats, terrorist arrests and investigations in Florida, Canada and Britain, and violence in Israel and Lebanon as evidence of World War III. He said Bush needs to deliver a speech to Congress and "connect all the dots" for Americans.

He said the reluctance to put those pieces together and see one global conflict is hurting America's interests. He said people, including some in the Bush Administration, who urge a restrained response from Israel are wrong "because they haven't crossed the bridge of realizing this is a war."
"This is World War III," Gingrich said. And once that's accepted, he said calls for restraint would fall away:
"Israel wouldn't leave southern Lebanon as long as there was a single missile there. I would go in and clean them all out and I would announce that any Iranian airplane trying to bring missiles to re-supply them would be shot down. This idea that we have this one-sided war where the other team gets to plan how to kill us and we get to talk, is nuts." '

Someone has to call a spade a spade.

Newt is doing so. This could be item #1 on a platform for President.

I agree. I would go one step further and say that Israel should go in militarily and take Gaza back.

I agree. I know there are people on the BB who seem to hate Newt because of his personal life, but he never minces words and he relays the truth of what is going on. That's more than our leaders do.

I think hate is too strong of a word but the following does give pause for a Christian about voting for Newt:

While in high school, Gingrich started to date his geometry teacher, Jackie Battley. On June 19, 1962, they were married. Their first child was born the following year.

In 1980, Gingrich separated from his first wife. Battley developed cancer: while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery, Gingrich tried to discuss the terms of a divorce. In February 1981, the divorce was finalized, and in August 1981, Gingrich married his second wife, Marianne Ginther.

In December 1999, Gingrich divorced his second wife, Marianne, after she discovered that he had been carrying on an affair for the past five years with a House aide twenty-three years his junior, Callista Bisek. Critics such as David Corn blasted him for hypocrisy, noting that this activity was concurrent with his leadership role in the impeachment of Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and his ascension to speaker on a family values platform. On August 19, 2000, Gingrich married Bisek as his third wife.

In his political views I have always liked Newt. But his personal life...yuk!

Newt's personal history might give one pause if thinking of supporting him for President.
However, I'd be influenced a great deal by who his opponent is.

For instance, if it was Kerry, I would have to vote for Newt. I prefer a philanderer to a traitor.

I sort of agree...I would say WW III ended in the late '80's/early '90's with the Eastern Bloc's collapse.

I think we are now in WW IV--a war against Islamic Radicalism.

I could easily vote for Newt. His personal life is sad, even tragic, but his political acumen is exemplary, and his knowlege of the human psyche is vast.

I can currently think of only George Allen the younger that I'd prefer.

Wikipedia is not a really good source. But if any or all of that is true I couldnt vote for him Regardless of his political views. We have had enough Presidents with that kind of history.

I'm with you. I'm hoping for a George Allen/Michael Steele ticket in '08.

I believe it was KenH who, in one of his former manifestations, said the same thing that Newt is saying. I can't remember how many political switches ago that was for Ken. Perhaps he will recall.

My experience has been that Wikipedia is an excellent source of information. The information about Newt's personal life is accurate.

Just because a source doesn't state what you want it to state doesn't mean it's not a good source, Mitchell.

Worst possible choice. Brilliant, energetic, and completely without scruples.

Ask Newt what he did when his country asked him to serve. I don't care much for Kerry's politics, but I have to admit that he's a patriot.

I remember when they called George McGovern a "traitor" too, for opposing the will of a republican president. There's something about a guy willing to risk his life for his country that infuriates some people.

At least I know Kerry cares about America enough to put his life on the line. That would be a great improvement over the current administration.

You asume you understand the motivation behind my comment. However since you do not know me outside of a few posts maybe you could save your assumption for something else.

Wikipedia is not a good source because it can be edited by anyone. Aside from inappropriate remarks its an open forum. Why is that reliable? Who knows where the information comes from on that thing.

In this particular case I know that the information about Newt's personal life is accurate since I know quite a bit about Newt having been a C-SPAN watcher for over twenty years since it became available on my local cable system in 1984.

Also, any information posted on the Internet by you, me, or anyone on Wikipedia needs to be verified. Personally, I have never found anything on Wikipedia, as to a statement of fact, that could be called false.

Opinions are, of course, just that - opinions.
