Is tithing a New Testament command?
Is tithing out of fashion? or is it a generational thing?
How do we get the next generation give to the Lord with with their whole heart?

    Barna Research writes:
    · The proportion of adults who tithe has dropped by 62% in the past year.
    · Just 6% of born again households tithed to their church in 2002.
    · Among the groups most likely to tithe are people over 55, college graduates, evangelicals, Republicans, conservatives, and residents of the South – but there was no segment among which at least 10% tithed.

Giving is down, attendance is up.

I think it depends on where you go to church. My church is strong on tithing...and I find it surprising how many times I hear that not all churches observe it.

In my book...it all belongs to God. Every blessing I get, is because he gave it to me. So blessing the church with my first fruits isn't such an unreasonable thing to do.

Just from jusding by our budget and membership, we must all be tithing in our chucrh. We have about400 in attendance on Sunday mornings and our Missions Budget alone in $150,000. I see the Barna studies all the time, but he has never called me.

Ya shoulsn't take out of the church if ya ain't puttin' in. Tithing is a biblically appropriate act of obedience.

We have estimated that our church gives less than 4% of their income based upon calculations for average income levels in our area. We have a mostly young congregation.

I tithe! And I have noticed since I started a long time ago, that the Lord always takes care of me. I have even seen where everything always comes out just right when I tithe.

I do not always give it all to my church. I sometimes give part of it to other places (such as chairities in my county..such as women shelters, orphanages...etc) that have a need for it.

God is good to me! And He trust me to tithe.

Our missions has just went up to $80,000 annually, with only 80 members, counting children 15 years and younger.

    Let's see, 400 divided by 2.5 is 160 average families x 40,000 average income=$6,400,000 x 10%=
    $640,000. Does that sound close?

Are yall SBC or Independent Missionary Fundamental Baptists?

If IMFB, I know some missionaries yall should consider.

    In His Holy Service,

    Brother Ricky

100% is God's, so I guess I just have to try to use a little of it to live as possible, I never have been too excited about measuring the percentages exactly, but 10% might be a good place to start. If you have to calculate it, maybe its not really a hearfelt offering, but an obligation, just a thought. New Testament giving is never an obligation, it is freely given.

Tithing is middle class America's way of robbing God. Not surprising to see hardline arminian (usually KJVO) independants be pro-tithing. It usually all goes together.

 I'm stumped. As a pro-tithe nonKJVO moderate calvinist, I have no idea what that means.

Giving it your all and the word tithing are contradictory statments!

Tithing was a requirement of the Old Testament and literally means 10% (though the tithe in the OT consisted of varying amounts but never included cash).

"Giving it your all" is what we are supposed to do today. We surrender our will to the Spirit and we cheerfully give what God lays on our heart. "Giving it your all" usually means you give more then a standard piddly amount of 10% and feel joyful doing so. Of course this also allows us to give to every man as he has need rather than just to the local church.

Not a popular opinion I know, but there is no verse that ever tells a NT church to tithe and there are no examples that they did otherwise. They actually gave better than we do today. Sell all you have and give it to the poor, that it isn't tithing, that is Spirit felt love!

Could be Daniel David is taking about the Malachi reference to robbing God of our tithes and offerings.

Or it could mean that all we have is God's - and we should be giving more the 10%.

Or maybe we should just let him explain what he means!!! So start explaining Daniel David!!!

Had the following bumper sticker on my car years ago - and a young man came up to me in a gas station and said "Honk, Honk!"

Tithe if you love Jesus - anybody can honk!

    Let's make something clear:

    A tithe is 10%.
An offering something besides a tithe.

    A tithe is paid.
    An offering is given.

We don't give tithes, we pay them. We don't pay offerings, we give them.

Thanks Lorelei and Johnv, that was the meaning of the original title, I just added "tithe" to clear up the meaning of the title.

I do feel that todays generation though is behind in their giving their "all" to God. Monitary giving is only a part of the gift we give to God, BUT IT IS A PART OF IT.

    Well.........

    I tithe
    I give offerings
    I give my time

But the question was with Tithe in parenthesis. I also do not go around bragging about what I do, or how much I do! AND...I am so sure no matter what I do, or would do, it would never be enough!

"Where you heart is, there will your treasure be also."

Give time, tithe, and talent. Everything we have belongs to God anyway.

If you expect everyone to believe this, then show some NT scripture that says it. OT scripture may be used to describe some of these concepts, but cash money had very little to do with 'tithes' or 'offerings.'

Have you actually done a comparison test? such as, go for about 2 months giving less than a 'tithe,' perhaps just slightly less, compared against 2 months of giving equal to or greater than a 'tithe,' and then make objective conclusions on whatever it is you claim you are "taken care of?" If the tithe is actually the mystical number which results in this 'taken care of' concept, there would then of necessity be an observable difference.

But to just say 'everything comes out right' in such an abstract way has no more competence than when a person who believes in astrology makes the same claim [as long as he follows his horoscope.
