An immigration reform bill moving quickly through the U.S. House of Representatives contains language requiring the Social Security Administration, Treasury Department and Department of Justice to study the concept of a machine-readable Social Security card with a photo ID.

The House Judiciary Committee approved the legislation (H.R. 4437), sponsored by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R.-Wis.), on a party-line 23-15 vote Thursday. Next week the House is set to vote on the bill, which calls for mandatory verification of employees’ legal status and increases enforcement along the Mexican border.

But language about the machine-readable Social Security cards has alarmed civil libertarians who fear it could lead to a national ID card for all Americans.

I can see how this is headed. They can't just do something about the problem, they have to drag the rest of us into it without fixing the problem at all. Of course, if enough people are concerned about the "language" and civil libertarian rights, it won't pass, and they will be back to square one, still doing nothing about illegal immigration.

How dumb do they really think we are?

    It's absolutely sickening.

I hear some people rail about it, but what would be wrong with an official national ID card to supplant the current unofficial "national ID card", our Social Security card?

Thanks for the good news. We need a national ID card. A chip implant is better.

Yep, that'll be the next step in the progression of the slippery slope.

Please, someone tell me how a national ID card will deport illegal aliens?

But what is wrong with a nation ID card compared to a Social Security card?

A national ID card could prevent them from collecting welfare and other services. Also from voting.

A national ID would not solve the problem and does nothing to fix the illegal alien situation.

Anything like a card, even a national ID card, can be faked:

Well, since a national ID card couldn't make the situation any worse, maybe we should try it?

Why don't we build a high tech wall around America?

A chip implant would be hard to fake.

This is where the libertarian in me gets the willies. What is to be "machine readable"? The SSN? It's printed on the card. Such a card has nothing to do with whether an illegal alien can get welfare as that has been granted through the courts. The federal government has no business tracking us. That is a proper concern of the states' police power. If states want to do that, leave it up to the voters and legislatures in each state. I am willing to make some compromises for national security but this is a step too far.

I agree, what the federal government is doing here is combining the new federal standard driver's license that states must comply with by 2008 with the SS# card. I don't see how this will help prevent illegal immigration or stop terrorist, this is just another example of how the GOP is working to increase the size and power of the federal government while still claiming to be the "conservative" party.

But will it make anything better? A National ID Card is bad for the American people. Those same members of the GOP who are praising it currently will be complaining about it when we have a Hillary or Janet Reno calling the shots and using this new federal citizen tracking system.

Just what would be bad about an official national ID card?
