One big thing we can do is to computerize all medical records. I cringe when I walk into a doctor's office and see rows of file cabinets containing paper records. Shades of the 1930's. We also need to provide for electronic transmission of prescriptions, computerized hospital records for patients and their recommended treatment, and knowledge based computer systems to do initial screening of patients.

Anyone that works at a medical office, pharmacy, insurance company, IT support company, and anyone that can hack into the system.

    So in short... anyone.

    No thanks.

So you believe paper records are superior to computerized records? This is the 21st century not the 19th. Records can be made safe by using the proper security and encryption techniques. Come into the present let alone the future. Ignorance is NOT bliss.

Your argument would carry more water if the health insurance industry did make billions in profits and didn't have millions per day to counter this legislation. Like the housing crises, there is no singular cause of the problems in the health insurance industry.

A not for profit public plan whose prices are set separate from the industry negotiations will separate fact from fiction. We then won't have to "fix" it or "regulate" since the industry will be forced to fix itself or not be competitive.

The poll poested in the other thread from Carpro is from June also.

You show me August first. If you believe all this fear mongering has changed that many minds in a month then I think you're gravely mistaken. We see more public protest and strong feelings from the right because the people who want real health care reform don’t have anything to argue about. We did our fighting last November and gave Obama the WH and the Congres a super majority. Now it's their turn to do the work.

Every plan but one being debated in congress is what I consider real reform which contains the public option. And the one with no public option has a snow balls chance etc...

Many on the right see all these reasons to fear the public option, fine, don’t choose that plan when you’re making your selections, choose one of the private plans instead. The pubic plan is only one of the options being ofered in the exchange, if you don't want it then don't pick it.

This is where we could use your side to help with solutions instead of just criticizing the efforts of those trying. I am sure you can see the savings from alatide suggestion, now please answer Bro Curtis with serious discussion, how do we secure them?

My answer Bro Curtis, it would be similar to police, SS and FBI records of today. Like the cop who just did a check on Obama from his squad car or the lady who ran Plumber Joe during the election, the system itself will be very secure but humans with access still leave a risk. However, that same risk is present with paper files today.

The good thing as you can see is that these breaches are highly traceable and I would suggest strong penalties to those who break public trust.

PS... And the money was already allocated in the stimulus...

    Solution to what exactly?

Actually, no, I don't see a centralized computer system as providing any particular savings.

Considering how well the IRS does with their multi-multi-million dollar system I see big problems instead.

Computer hackers would have a difficult time hacking into my paper files.

    Got any proof of this?

Only it was advertised as jobs creation - not a savings thing.

You like to drag subjects off topic. Anyhoo, get rid of the insurance lobbyists.

If you aren't going to limit malpractice payments, then you shouldn't limit profit. Doctors should profit from their work. Better doctors should be able to charge more for their services.

And you fail to address the statement I keep making, you don't want to fix health care, you want it free. You want the same system we have, except those better off pay for everyone. That will be a disaster, as has been documented in several threads.

You mean like our defense systems ? And have you got any annual savings estimates from computerizing all medical records ?

Do you know of any major profitable business today that hasn't computerized its operations. Name one.

There are a number of people on this forum who are Marxist/socialists/Fascists. I will not name them at this time but they know who they are. It is a fact, however, that Marxist philosophy is atheistic. That does not speak well for those on the Forum.

Before computerizing any company will do a cost estimate and a savings estimate.

Where has this been done for the computerization of medical records at a national level?

The savings come from not having to duplicate test. Test, MRI etc.. will travel with you from doctor to doctor. Currently, the specialist your primary care refers you to has to duplicate all the testing they've already done.

I don't believe your disputing electronic files are more secure. Buildings are broken into just like hackers break into systems. However, paper files are open to the janitor and every other employee. Electronic files are password protected and everything done on a computer can be traced.

Do I have proof that every key stroke you make on a computer is traceable???? I gave you two examples where the perpetrators were caught because of electronic records.

And it will take workers to design and build the system. Build the computers and servers. Make the software and connect it all together. Enter all the paper records into the system. That is jobs and stimulus.

So, LeBuick, how much will it cost to computerize and how much will it save?

So you admit the medical profession should run at a profit ?

You still haven't put up any savings estimates.

Also, a lot of businesses who do have their paperwork digitized keep it off line. But I'm sure being an engineer yourself, you knew that.

Funny... Real funny... I can regurgitate the government numbers but I don't buy all of the hype. As I stated, it will save on duplicate testing, allow doctors to instantly see your medical history so they can make more informed prognosis and save us from filling out that mountain of forms when you change doctor.

Now there is a downside also, medical records clerks and people who archive records will need to be retrained for other jobs.

Do you actually believe that banks would be more efficient if they had rows of people sitting at desks writing deposits and withdrawals into ledger books rather than entering the information into computer systems? Shades of Ebeneezer Scrooge? I can't believe that anyone needs to be convinced of the merits of computerization in the year 2009.
