So what you fear the legislation might make happen you admit is happening today.

I never said I feared the legislation might make it happen. Can you find where I said that?

Of course this is happening today. The point is that if we really want to reform health care, we should actually fix things such as the problem of giving free health care to illegal aliens. Most people are happy with their health care coverage. The only parts we should be reforming are the broken parts.

You're correct in saying that I haven't done a business case on computerization of the health care industry. It's my guess that it would be much more efficient and save money but more importantly I think it would save lives. Actually, I think much more could be done than just putting records and prescriptions on computers. I think initial diagnoses could be made by expert systems with a review and followup by physicians. I think much of the more routine work done by doctors could be done by physicians assistants. With operations starting to be performed using small scale robotics we could have surgeons operate over the internet with high definition images assisting their actions. In general, high quality "virtual presence" video could be used to replace the need to visit doctors' offices in many cases. Using this technology we could have doctors make "house calls" again (virtually).

You are nuts. I have to reboot my computer several times a week. There is no way on God's green Earth that I would put myself or a loved one under a machine to cut me open and swish around in the innards. How many folks would have to die before THAT was perfected ? Or are you so willing to provide health care to the people for free that a thousand deaths or so are "worth it" ?

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Robotics to operate on people. This coming from the guy who called our troops murderers.

So in other words, they are not an issue when talking about the health care bill under consideration. You're right.

Correct, the health care bill under consideration is only looking to break things, not fix things. So, in that regards, we shouldn't be talking about actually fixing something that is broken.

On the other hand, we should be talking about real health care reform. Real health care reform would be less government intervention, removing stupid laws like the ones that mean illegal aliens get free health care, etc.

And some of us think we are ingeneers...

There's a reason we don't have automated, computer driven cars yet. Stuff happens that is outside the norm. Same thing with this surgery thing. It ain't gonna happen.

(and I'm pretty computer savvy, considering I'm a computer programmer)
