No problem with what you are saying, and I do appreciate it. I have known some of those we classify as "great: however and I fear that far too often there are "great fundamentalist" who would not dream of cleaning a toilet, mopping a floor, setting up chairs, or taking any parking place but one close to the entrance. How often do we see churches where the pastors reserved parking space is either closer or at the same place as the handicapped spaces?

Do we really, truly believe that Jesus would have to wear $1000 suits or drive the fanciest car on the market? Would He presend a menu of the foods that He would or would not eat? Would He send a letter with the expected love offering? Would He choose to take the best paying church over one who could not promise a love offering of any size?

These are not made up stories, but things I experienced from some of the "great fundamentalist leaders" when I was a deacon chairman. Would these be truly, Biblical great men?

I have no problem properly honouring God's faithful servant. I do think however that some of the greatest fundamentalists are busy working away on a road crew, toiling in an office, teaching a class of five year olds, or raising a family on her own. Why not give an honourary doctorate to some of these great fundamentalists?

Yes, faithful preaching can be service. It is a service to write books to help us in our Christian life. It is service to leave and go to a foreign mission field. But is that any greater service than a Christian appliance repairman we knew who would not let us pay for repairs because we taught in a Christian school?

I just think that we may too often measure greatness by a different standard than God's word does.

C4K, your observations are right on and certainly ring true with the reality that most of us have seen among some Fundamentalists. I would point out, though, that the original posts were addressing the question of great Fundamentalist leaders, not great Fundamentalists. The appliance repairman may be greater in the kingdom of Heaven, but that doesn't make him a leader.

(And I would not give such a servant an honorary doctorate for the same reason that I would not give him an honorary plumbing license: he is not a plumber and does not do plumbing, and such an award would be farcical.)

Fair point Brother Pipedude, I got off track. But should not great leaders be first and foremost servants?

Absolutely. I cannot speak about other crowds, but the IFBs have had a real problem in that area. Maybe less so today than in the '70s.

Anybody on these earlier lists who cannot pass the "servant" test doesn't belong on the "great" list.

    Honestly,

I started this thread in the very beginning simply because there were so many negative threads on the Fundamental board - I got sick and tired of seeing whining, complaining and negative titles on 'our' little forum here, that I decided to make a thread with a positive title.

And yet, somehow, we find a way to make this negative too. Can't we just have a thread that's positive all the way through? Do we constantly have to remind ourselves of the negative?

Obviously there's going to be some in leadership positions who take their own value far too seriously. However, this thread was meant for US to give some honor to the men we consider leaders in fundamentalism today - not for those same men to give themselves a pat on the back. I daresay most of them are far too busy to get on here and read this little thread anyway.

Just for a little while - let's give honor to whom honor is due, and let those who fall short just be laid aside - just for awhile. :D :wavey:

Bapmom, I agree with you wholeheartedly. There are some here who are so boastful and full of self that they have to make sure that we all know what they know and believe what they believe. Some people here need to spend more time on their knees and less in a desk chair. I am glad you started this thread...I am researching some of the names that were posted in here....so I can learn about them.

One of the lectures in my Liberty apologetics class said this "Legalism is someone telling you to be more like Christ when actually all they are telling you to do is be more like themselves!" and I agree. Preference is totally different from commandments. I had one Pastor who preached against t.v., and now I have one who talks about watching it. THAT is preference.

I understand your heart and intention, but what makes a leader great. If we don't define that how can we determine greatness?

I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to mention Dr. David Sorenson. I have known him for many years, and can personally say that he walks the talk and is a straight up 100% fundamentalist preacher.

No particular target. If the shoe fits, wear it, Mom always said.

Well, if you feel you have the authority and knowledge to make comments like that, who am I to stand in the way?

Yes Sir, I'll join ya. Never can have too much prayer. Now just to warn you, I have bad knees so sometimes pray in my desk chair.

    My corollary to that is:
If you know the shoe doesn't fit don't even try it on, e.g. you wear size 8s and the shoe is a 6, why bother to take your shoes off to try it on.

Good point, Squire, and my intent was not to try those shoes on. The shoes are too small and the toes are far too pointy for my feet. My intent was to understand why someone would feel that they have the ability to pass such judgment over others. Probably should have used the advice of one poster on the BB who often uses the "type, type, type... erase, erase, erase" method of posting. :)

CC, I think the intent of the OP got lost in the thread. I for one recognize my circle of influence is limited. It is nice to get information about others whom I would otherwise only read or hear a name in passing. Likewise, I want to let others know about men I know.
