    To answer the OP directly, yes I have thanked the Lord (many Times) for my smokin hot wife......"Thank you Lord" .... Only not at a Nascar race. As for her....I am truly grateful.

    My wife, she ain't pretty, if we use the world's standards.
    she ain't got the curves no more, ain't got the skin no more, ain't got the "fenders" no more, ain't got the hair no more.
    she sleeps in the car while we're in traffic with her mouth open which she would never have done forty years ago when our generation thought we were "smokin' hot".
    her voice quivers over the phone now, and her hands are grizzled from all that hand washing she did for my kids and her back is bent from all those years of working sewing machines.
    but when I think of my shortcomings to her, the stupid things an unregenerate does and says to a faithful wife, like coming home drunk, salary all gone, or cops knocking on our door to tell her that an overgrown kid calling himself her husband is locked up for a stupid fight with somebody over nothing, or her finding pictures of some other woman in my wallet, or a note here and there, or demanding a good dinner when I blew half my month's pay on booze and numbers....
    and forty-some years later, she's still around and she's still as patient and my children all grown ....
    man, I know what gratitude means, and I know what love means, and I know God loves me for giving her to me, and, like somebody who used to live in a forest once said: I know the ocean exists, because I've seen the brooks and the river.
    I thank the Lord for my smokin hot wife every night, in private.

    So what you mean is that when a pastor gets invited to give the "invocation" he is to use God's Name to reflect metaphoric language sure to be understood by the audience, and if he doesn't, and he uses language that is in step with what God said about His Person and His Name, then he may not "connect" with the audience ?

    Secondly, I don't know what God has to do with NASCAR, or tires, or Toyota sports cars, or any of those things he mentioned.
    Not that I'm not happy that at least here's an event that wants to invoke God's blessings where schools and public institutions are shutting Him out in a supposedly Christian country, but, hey, in as much as that opportunity exists, why not use the occasstion to raise God's Name high above instead of bringing God down to our level and use metaphoric, colloquialism reflecting culture ?

    In seminary once, we had this pastor-student whom NOBODY calls to say prayers because he goes and thanks God for the air we breathe, the stars in the skies, the galaxies in the universe, the snake he thankfully did not step on while on his way to visit some members in that communist rebel infested area, the soothing sound of the brook by his church, the meals at the seminary, the cooks, the utensils, the plates, the tables, the breeze, the cooking oil, the fish, the rice, the water used to boil the rice, and so on. We all obviously understood what he was saying, but was it appropriate ?

    At the start of the school year, we didn't know who he was, and so we asked him to say grace for the evening meal, and he went that rote. Well, thirty minutes later, he opened his eyes to an empty meal hall and a note on the wall that said: Brod, kindly close the windows before you leave !:laugh:

    I may be wrong but I am pretty sure the pastors wife of that church used to be a poster here. I remember that church name.

    I'm positive my Father isn't shocked at some of the prayers and talking to him that came out of me over the years.

    My three oldest kids are extremely close in age and it left me little to no time for quiet time in prayer and meditation so I got in the habit of talking to God throughout my day. It didn't matter what I was doing...there were many times I was washing dishes or scrubbing a toilet and that doesn't exactly make for a holy moment when you're trying to get human waste out of toilet before it stains. But that's how I kept up communication and closeness. Sometimes it was "Lord, this is really gross!"

    My prayers differ DRASTICALLY according to time, place, and what is happening. When I first came to Christ guess what? I even cussed in my prayers/confessions. "I really ****** up today and I need you." There were no lightning strikes and that's just where I was at the time.

    As I grew that changed.

    Still, there are times when that communication is holy and reverent. There are times when it is happy and joyful. There's time's when it's downright silly. There's times when it's sorrowful.

    And if my husband called me smokin' hot in front of a crowd? LOL! I'd be tempted to take him to the nearest electronics store and let him choose his gadget of choice for not describing me for how I feel I look, which most certainly doesn't fall under the category of smokin' hot! :laugh:

    And, NASCAR meets All Star Wrestling...

    Totally inappropriate. We can pray in a common tongue in front of a varied audience, but should do so reverently so as to bring God glory. I've had occasion to officiate weddings and funerals in front of atheist crowds, and have prayed in language that people with no theological or churchy background can understand, and later have had many come to me and thank me for making clear some things that they never really understood when termed in theological language typical to our congregational exercises. We can and should pray in that fashion, just as Jesus taught us to pray in every-day language with the model prayer we now call The Lord's Prayer.

    And, for the smokin' hot wife thing... I join the crowd that thanks God every night before going to sleep for giving me the ideal and best gift -- a wife who is absolutely smokin' hot to me, even after 38 years together. She is the best gift, apart from Christ, that I could even imagine. I have mentioned my feelings about her publicly, both in print and from the pulpit, but I have not demeaned our relationship by channeling a Hollyweird movie character for impact. Could not do that to my (real) smokin' hot wife lest she become smokin' hot in the other fashion indicated by Ann above... :wavey:

    I posted this on a similar thread...but I think it applies here as well:


    The fuss made over the "smokin' hot wife" obscures the other problems with the "prayer"--it was essentially an advertisement of the sponsor list. It sounded like he was paid by Sonoco fuel and others to mention them in his "prayer."

    At least there could be an argument made (weak though it may be) that he's proud of his wife and finds her attractive. The other parts of his "prayer" were shills for ad time. I think that's patently offensive to God--and if I were to do that, I'd have an extremely upset church when I got back home (and rightfully so).

    But frankly...the church's anger would pale in comparison to how God felt about the "prayer."

    I doubt God is amused when our prayer also doubles as a commercial.

    I've been mulling this over for a few days and have come to the conclusion that the most important thing here is not that he prayed nor the fact that he uttered those particular words, but instead his motivation for uttering them- he was not there to pray, he was there to entertain and to "help God along".

    It's despicable, but all of us have been guilty of those things at times- well maybe YOU haven't...

    I just watched the video

    I have no problem with it whatsoever. He was referring to his WIFE..not some mistress.

    His wife! His beloved. His life partner.

    Could you imagine how that made his wife feel when she heard that??

    Here's to that guy...

    Only problem is, he was SUPPOSED to be talking to God, not to his wife. It's one thing to say that prayer at home with your family, another thing to do it at a public event where you're supposed to be praying for the group.

    But then again, he was doing it all for show anyways- he admitted it.

    I don't have a problem with it either. I think his reference to his wife less about her in the same way that the entire prayer, at least after "Heavenly Father,... You said in all things give thanks. So, we wanna" was in specific, and each part, a greater reference to Ricky Bobby, therefore it would seem to me that the preacher's wife would not have taken this seriously, although she might well know it to be an accurate description of her husbands thoughts.
