    Short point:

I once had occassion to attend a (Marxist) Longshoreman Union's meeting.

They ranted on and on about how (Marxist-backed, please read history) Unions are responsible for giving American workers their weekends.

    I beg to differ.

Please read the 4th Bidding of God (Fourth Commandment).

The reason Moses implemented that, at least in part, was as a burst of FREEDOM to the long-oppressed inhabitants of Canaan who had been previously worked CONTINUOUSLY, without stop, by their wealthy Ba'al worshipping Canaanite owners. By setting aside a "Day of Rest", Moses thereby assured that the monied land owners could no longer unflaggingly work their peasants to exhaustion and beyond.

So if you ever hear a (Marxist) Union speaker claim (Marxist) Unions gave you your weekend, please find the strength to point out that MOSES beat them by about 3K years.

A couple of points of friendly correction, if you will. The Sabbath was known before the Ten Commandments were given Moses. Proof? The incident with the manna happened before that. They were told not to gather manna on the Sabbath, a day of rest. Thus they knew about it before the Ten Commandments were given.

Secondly, a Sabbath is not a weekend. It was normally the seventh day of the week, but there could be double Sabbaths, a week of Sabbaths on festival times, etc. The weekend itself is a result of Christianity, actually, as the early church gathered on Sunday, however since most of them were Jews, their Sabbath was still Saturday. Thus both days became incorporated into a 'non work' time and the 'weekend' was born.
