This reminds of the brouhaha over Senator Lott's remark at Senator Thurman's birthday party a few years ago that cost him his leadership position.

Petty arguing between the two major parties. Nothing of substance on either side. Nothing that benefits the country.

The only common ground blacks and whites have when communicating with the word "plantation" is slavery.

Yes, FP, Senator Clinton was referring to Democrat interests. Still, it was a poorly worded statement by her. The Democrats jump on President Bush about some of his wording so the Republicans are doing the same to Senator Clinton.

Agreed. I alreadly mentioned it was poorly worded.

Otherwise, they would have to spend their time on something substantive.

    Not holding my breath...

Unfortunantly, I don't see this as an unfortunant choice of words. I recognize it as a common tactic when dealing with blacks by some politicians. It is a way to keep them in the fold. Things can never get better, or ,oh my God, they might vote Rebuplican.

The Republicans hardly have a clean record in dealing with the race issue, Bunyon, in their rhetoric.

Normally I am on your side in these discussions, but I have to disagree with you here. Of course Hilaries comment had allusions to race. She was speaking to an all black audience, on MLK day, who cheered after she said it; and is it possible to say, 'plantation' and not have some raciel overtones. If she truly wanted to emphasis power consulation, and truly wanted to exclude race, "plantation" would be one of the worst descriptions, and I don't take Hilary as stupid.

That may be so, but like I said before, besides the imagery evoked the comment was about corruption. Most people, including black people, are able to discern this. Why is anyone surprised that a Democrat would criticize the Republican majority? It's not race mongering, it's politics.

She also made the comment that Blacks were left behind in the Katrina aftermath. So one way or another race was mentioned in the speech.

Did not know, as I did not watch, read, or listen to the speech. Still, it is a non-issue to me. She is playing the game of politics, it pains me to say, I expect nothing less.

Couldn't have stated it better. All of this "keeping them in the fold" rhetoric is amusing to me, as if black people cannot understand politics. I could say the same for Republican politicians and the Chrisitan right.

Hillary Clinton's comment was shrewdly intended.

Did anyone else notice the small ad with Hillary Clinton’s picture "Should Hillary Run in 2008" that appears in this thread?

Whew! You must be smarter than me. Explain the difference in those two statements.

Yes. The Google ads pick up on the words being used on the page.

There are different kinds of plantations. Maybe she meant run like a coca plantation. Refering of course to the Iran Contra scandal and the intercepts Sibel Edmonds translated. Government dealing drugs, it's nothing new so it must be ok. Right?

Is it race mongering when Republicans tell black people that Democrats are holding them back, or whatever?

This is absolutely ridiculous, and I don't even necessarily like Hillary Clinton. There is no point to this discussion. I guess the next time there is a thread concerning a republican supporting any of the so called "moral" issues I am going to break out the "religion mongering" label. Unless someone can logically point out the difference in the two.

For the record, I don't believe there is either. It is called politics, expect nothing less.

I disagree the most people would discern a comment about a "plantation" would be about corruption. Indeed, I hardly doubt if I asked twenty people tommorrow, a single one would say that was what it was about. Perhaps I will ask a few people tommorrow and see what they say. I'm not arueing that this isn't politics on Hilary's part. I'm just saying it was obviously racial. I think most people, black or white, discerns that quite readily.

I happen to agree. most of the time, when republicans, including and maybe especially president Bush, mention morals it is aimed at the Christian right base to "keep them in the fold". Just like you said before. I find this equally annoying and worthless.

Well, I'm just repeating myself here, but I have to say it again. I think if I asked 1000 people tommorrow, 1000 people would answer that an allusion to a plantation is an allusion to slavery of some sort. If I wanted to say the administration was run by corruption, I would equate them to Enron.

Well obviously. Imagery aside if someone were to hear or read Clinton's comments about the House, not just the plantation part, they would be able to discern what she was talking about. That was my point. The plantation comment, calculated as it may be, was not race mongering. Of course, if one was only to hear the plantation comment they would not be able to glean government corruption from it. It was never my intention to imply otherwise.

That may be so, but like I said before, besides the imagery evoked the comment was about corruption.

For the record, that is the comment on the House in its entirety, not just the plantation comment.

    Ken,

You make a valid point here, although I doubt that it will happen. I have been studying political campaign trends over the past few elections. Now is the time that the Democrats are going to shore up the strong democratic base. Hillary's comment was calculated, and this is probably why. Using the plantation imagery was a sure way to get press coverage, as well as the added benefit of attacking the Republican majority and the present administration for corruption. After the last election some have argued that Kerry focussed too much on the independent vote, therefore the Democrats did not have a strong democratic base showing support.

Now is the time for both parties to solidify their base, as the election draws closer the candidates will be moving closer to the middle ground. The Democrats are going to brutally attack the Republicans as much as they can and frame the entire party as corrupt.

I agree completely! uggg! That is unbelievable.

Hillary makes me ill. I hope everyone slammed her good for that comment. I haven't watched the news much lately to see if they have.
