    I'm interested in the history of these things.

    When and where were they first used on churches?

    What was their purpose?

    I have heard that they were used long ago to ward off evil spirits from the church? (Of course, what wasn't used to ward off evil spirits back then? ;) )

    I haven't been able to find anything online.
