House OKs $819B stimulus bill in win for Obama

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a historically huge $819 billion stimulus bill Wednesday night, filled with new spending and tax cuts at the core of the young adminstration's revival plan for the desperately ailing economy. The vote was 244-188.

"We don't have a moment to spare," Obama declared at the White House as congressional allies hastened to do his bidding in the face of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The vote sent the bill to the Senate, where debate is expected to begin as early as this week on a companion measure already taking shape. Democratic leaders have pledged to have legislation ready for Obama's signature by mid-February.

A mere eight days after Inauguration Day, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday's events heralded a new era. "The ship of state is difficult to turn," said the California Democrat. "But that is what we must do. That is what President Obama called us to do in his inaugural address."

With unemployment at its highest level in a quarter-century, the banking industry wobbling despite the infusion of staggering sums of bailout money and states struggling with budget crises, Democrats said the legislation was desperately needed.

 What a joke for a title.

AP has always been in the tank for Obama.

Is this the first step in his destruction of America?

A bill sold on infrastructure rehab contains what...5-8% for this? Lots of pork. More wasteful spending...ballooning debts. Someone call the Chinese and ask them if they have their checkbooks ready.

Is all Bush and Obama know how to do is spend?

I agree, I am disappointed with the GOP for not focusing on removing all that fat. Instead they brought in an entirely new proposal that was 100% tax cuts. I believe if they of focused on the real fat they would have put the Dems in a bad position with the public and look like the rescuers that saved the day. Now it appears they are business as usual since 100% voted against the plan.

Obama on the other hand, is getting praised for the effort he put forth to bring them on board...

Some of the fat did get trimmed. The ridiculous contraception (So much for staying out of the womb, eh, Big Brother?) claptrap is gone. And the Mall will have to live with the turf it has. But still, this is Washington, and the hogs are at the trough. More of the same old same old from the great Changer.

My concern is that this bill needs to probably be twice as much as it is in the amount spent. But at least it's a start. I won't be surprised if the Congress has to come back later this year or early next year and pass another stimulus bill of roughly the same size.

The baby boomers always have been very selfish, as a generation.

In another thread Gina pointed out the contraceptive legislation was really the GOP twisting some provisions for STD. It had nothing to do with abortion.
