How Many Modifications of KJV1611 to 1769

The 1769 Oxford KJV still has these non-standard spellings that are not in many present KJV editions: "houshold" (Gen. 18:19), "falsly" (Gen. 21:23), "ews" (Gen. 31:38), "foles" (Gen. 32:15), "housholds" (Gen. 42:33), "yern" (Gen. 43:30), "fole" (Gen. 49:11), "waggon" (Num. 7:3), "grashoppers" (Num. 13:33), "milstone" (Deut. 24:6), "befal" (Deut. 31:17), "shamelesly" (2 Sam. 6:20), "falshood" (2 Sam. 18:13), "befel" (2 Sam. 19:7), "perversly" (2 Sam. 19:19), "vallies" (1 Kings 20:28), "loath" (Job 7:16), "falshood" (Ps. 144:8 ), "grashopper" (Ecc. 12:5), "wholsome" (Prov. 15:4), "milstones" (Isa. 47:2), "dunghils" (Lam. 4:5), "waggons" (Ezek. 23:24), "carelesly" (Ezek. 39:6), "ancles" (Ezek. 47:3), "housholder" (Matt. 13:27), "dunghil" (Luke 14:35), "ancle" (Acts 3:7), "foretel" (2 Cor. 13:2), "farewel" (2 Cor. 13:11), "injoin" (Philemon 1:8), "injoined" (Hebrews 9:20).

The 1769 Oxford still has "travel" at Numbers 20:14 and Lamentations 3:5 instead of "travail."

I tried that same search again. According to the search results that I got, it was on the second page of the results, near the bottom.


This edition is not a complete 1769, having just most of the Old Testament up to around Jeremiah.

In her 2010 book, Gail Riplinger wrote: "The total misprints of both of the two 1611 printings combined exhibit well over 200 misprints from the intended text of the KJB translators. When matched against a current KJB, one might wrongly conclude that 'the' 1611 KJB was different in 136 places from today's KJB, not realizing that the differences were typographical errors brought about during the typesetting of the two 1611 editions" (Hidden History of the English Scriptures, p. 49). Riplinger had made the same statements in her 2003 book In Awe of Thy Word (p. 600).

What is the likely source of this claimed number [136] of printing errors?

In my opinion, the likely source is from statements by D. A. Waite before Waite and Riplinger parted and started opposing each other. Thus, Riplinger's claim may actually be dependent on Waite's research concerning KJV editions.

D. A. Waite asserted that there are "136 substantial changes" between the 1611 KJV and current KJV plus "285 minor changes of form" (Defending the KJB, p. 244, see also pp. 3-4). In another book, Waite observed that in “changes of words as to their sound from the King James Bible of 1611 to the present King James Bible there are only 136 differences” (Central Seminary Refuted on Bible Versions, p. 24). He then indicated that if such small things as a change from “towards” to “toward” are included “you get 413 words in all” (p. 25). Later in this same book, he gives his “only 421 translational changes” count (p. 76), but he also gives a count of “only 435 changes” (p. 116).

Evidently, Gail Riplinger is somewhat uninformed or misinformed concerning KJV editions and is dependent on inaccurate, outdated research. D. A. Waite missed or overlooked many of the actual 2,000+ differences between the 1611 edition and one of the varying present-day KJV editions [besides a 1611 reprint]. Waite later admitted that his earlier count was incorrect, but Riplinger seems to be unaware of that. ​
