Revelation chapter 1 tells us that God sent his angel to John to show unto his servants things which MUST SHORTLY come to pass. So how shortly was the shortly in that verse ?

that which was and is to come to pass will be done quickly, so when jesus returns it will happen quickly, same for rapture, same for the coming of the beast etc!

Not that it would happen in his day, but that whenever events happen, will be quickly to happen!

Or even here: Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen.

My Pastor just started sermons in Genesis and I asked him what he thought Paul's concept was of Gen. 3:15 "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel," if this passage in Romans was a reference to Gen 3:15.

He hasn't gotten back to me. However what is shortly here in Rom. 16:20?

    Here is what I think.

Does Paul link us to the the seed of the woman or maybe even include us as the seed of the woman? How did the seed of the woman, 'the Christ," bruise Satan? Are we included with the seed? Rev. 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with:" Matt 20:23

Did Paul believe that through the swiftness of, "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. O death, where thy sting? O Hades, where thy victory? " 1 Cor 15:52,55, that we also would bruise Satan? Isn't that how Jesus bruised Satan?

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

In other words, even though some of whom I have called have died they will be raised from the dead and those alive will be changed incorruptible, bruising Satan forever and ever.

It is reasonable to point out that there are a number of ways to understand what is being said here. In my eccletic read of Revelation (it is a highly eccletic book) it is more historical than futurist, depicting the course of salvation history through to the, eventual, end of the age.

One additional point is that in the this preamble to the book, it could be speaking conditionally or it could be speaking to the series of visions (the ecstatic experiences of John) which would consume the text the book.

It doesn't mean all of the stuff in the book is futurist.

One of the challenges with the dispensational premillennial position is that it appears in the NT that the eschatological expectation is heightened in the earliest works and less so by the end. Also, in keeping with this verse, the return of Christ is often referred to as quickly...this is a subjective term but after about 2000 years can't we agree it probably isn't going to happen "quickly" anymore?

revelation has history that happened at that time to the churches, and also that which was to come, as John used the current setting of church being under persucution by Nero and Domintion to be a type of the Great One to come under future beast/Antichrist!

Read it as happened right now.even worse later, and when jesus comes for his church , will be indded quickly, twinkling of an eye!

Daniel chapter 12 verse 1--God tells Daniel to shut up the words and seal the book because it was for the time of the end.

Revelation chapter 22 verse 10--God tells John to NOT seal the sayings of the prophecy of this book, for the TIME is AT HAND.

Now the time period from Daniel to Jesus day was shorter than the time from Jesus day until our present day,So if it was not for Daniels time being shorter than our time,Why would God say seal not to John for the time is at hand(meaning it was for Johns day)and why was the word SHORTLY used when it has been over 2k years already and keeps going on ? We are time creatures and do you think God would tell them of their day things that MUST SHORTLY come to pass was stretched out over 2k years and going?

I find it hard to swallow and bet the Saints of that day did also if they could hear us saying today it can happen any day now and its been over 2k years

The weather person tells you that a storm is SHORTLY on its way to your area and for you to take caution--will you sit there for 2k years and think it will be ok or get to shelter fast ??

Just some thoughts for us to consider :)

    "shortly"...

    It is measured by God.

    How will you know?

    Revelation 1 tells us.
    When this happens:

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
