Why don't we ever talk about THIS?

Take ties, for instance. Silliest things in the world to my way of thinking -- are they leftovers from a time when all men wanted to be hung, or what? Are they somehow defining of a man biblically? Are they part of not looking like a woman?

And why the suit coats in the summer? Is there something I don't understand about it being masculine to have to sweat profusely and somehow still maintain a gracious demeanor? Why is it considered proper and modest for a man to wear layers of clothing on the hottest of days when women are allowed to wear loose and lovely summer dresses?

Is this cultural or somehow biblical? Is this part of not looking like a woman?

You know Helen, you might be on to something.
Lets see, I think it is a destinctive between men and women, she is light and airy, and not sweating and smelly, he is dress in his fabric armor and sweaty and stinky. Thus proving his manhood, and masculinity, he can sweat with the best of them.
And thats one way to tell men from women in case you get confused, sweaty and smelly / light and not stinly.

I'd like to know hwo and why the modern tie was invented, and why do men think it looks dressy and nice, and neat. It looks like a noosence,(may have something to do with the being hung thing), who wants to feel like their being strangled all day.

Just who wrote this dress code anyway? Isn't 3 piece suit and tie a cultural thing? In some countries they don't have suits, but are able to dress up without them.

You know I seem to rememebr a lot of old hollywood movies where men wore suits and ties all the time.

I hate it when men dress in sexually alluring clothes. I mean, really.

For example, I like a man who is hairy, but with a neatly trimmed beard and longer hair. When they wear this to church, it turns my head, when I should be worshipping.

What makes me annoyed is when they wear pants that don't cover their buttocks, and the crack syndrome persist. Talk about bad cleavage. What is up with that????

Men need to take care in how they present themselves to women, so that we can worship God without turning to the left or right, or without having to see the moon.

Paul's instructions were concerning women, and it is a serious topic. Men are not allowed to wear whatever they want, but the greatest danger concerns the weaker vessels.

Kate, here is one site that purports to give the History of Neckwear. Don't know how accurate it is.

If my head is turned during worship service it is my fault, not other people, my heart problem not theirs, I would not blame others for my own short comings. It's called self control.

And yes I think how men dress is also a serious problem, men like to yell at women how they should dress, and not bother whith how they dress.

Cool site, I found that ties were probably invented in the mid 1600's. What that says to me is that they aren't biblical to wear.

In Proverbs 7 we are warned that it is the men who may be enticed by women dressed like harlots. Not the other way around.

He was a young man lacking sense (vs.7). And there she was, Proverbs 7:10-11, "And behold a woman comes to meet him, Dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart. She is boisterous and rebellious; Her feet do not remain at home."

And then in Matthew 5:28 another warning to men, "But, I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her already in his heart."

And in 1 Cor 7:1, "Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman."

Why is good for a man not to touch a woman? I personally believe that women respond to touch as men respond to what they see. God made us different.

Since we do not adopt the garb of the scholar as many high church ministers do, we in the low church have adopted the attire of the businessman and deem that mandatory for pastors and leaders and for all men who want to dress their best for God. Personally, I disagree with it, but the pastor where I am now holds to tha position and as associate pastor I wear the uniform of that church though I do it with a western flair not Wall St.

Men in general have more problems in this area than women in that men tend to be tempted to lust quicker than women even in an age where women go to male strip joints.

God obviously knows ths and hence has directed the woman to not add to that situation by wearing seductive or revealing clothing. Look at it from a Romans 15 perspective and realize that you have a responsibility ro bear the burden of your weaker brother and not please yourself. If you turn heads in a revealing or seductive ay it is your fault as well as the man's. If your meek spirit and holiness turns heads then it is OK for both of you.

I don't know for sure but I think the tie was made to cover the shirt buttons. That is just a guess though.

I believe the topic should be addressed. Men are more visually stimulated than women, but that doesn't mean that women are not visually stimulated as well.

In church I do believe you should dress in a manner respectful to God. I also feel, as Scripture points out we are not to be a distraction. Wearing a clown suit and red wig would be very distracting to others in the congregation, especially kids.

    Great topic!
I have been a member of a church where no one but the pastor wore a suit and/or tie, the church I am a member of now you can go either way, although the Pastor encourages men to wear a suit and tie because as he sees it you are in the Lord's house and we should give him as much respect as we do secular functions.
Wearing a tie IS a man made tradition and is not in the Bible. I will wear one not to look good but just as a sign of my respect for the house of God.
As far as casual wear, MY OWN PREFERANCE is no shorts, t- shirts, secular designs on a shirt no pants that are even close to being tight and my shirt will be un- buttoned no more than one from the top.

In all seriousness, I have never understood when
people say that men are visually stimulated but
women are not. While some will go so far as to
say that most women are not visually stimulated,
or that they are rarely visually stimulated, I Am
Easily Visually Stimulated. However, I have
learned, with discipline, to deal with this directly,
rather than demand that men change their clothing.

Now, this may sound ridiculous, but I remember as
an 18-year-old girl seeing a boy in whom I was
interested, sitting in a low-slung chair, and his
ankles were showing. Believe me, I was visually
stimulated. By ankles. Oh, my. I did marry him,
though. 8o) That husband was visually very
    pleasing in every way.

My present husband -- I love to see him in his
trekking gear! He looks so cute in his khakkis,
high socks, climbing boots, and his safari hat.
Mm-m-m-m-m! And when he puts on that black
suit with the black suspenders, he sends me into
    orbit!

Further, if women are not visually stimulated, why
do they make those romance books with photos /
paintings of men on the front? Why do some
women go nuts over some person they see on a
screen? Why do girls buy posters of men?

Another thing I do not understand is why pants on
a woman are deemed more sexually stimulating to
men and thus not allowed by some, but pants on a
man are all right. I am not being facetious; I don't
understand. If a particular item of outside clothing
is not stimulating on the one, why would it not be
stimulating on the other? To me, dresses seem that
they would be far more stimulating to a man, unless
they are particularly ugly or bulky.

With regard to men and their cleaveage, which I
have on occasion seen in churches, gross. But
women and their cleaveage -- either cleaveage --
gimme a break! Keep that stuff covered up! Why
is it awful for a man to show, but if a woman shows
a little, oh well??? Socially acceptable maybe, but
    is it God-acceptable? NOT!

I think we need to turn back to the Bible and learn
what it says regarding nakedness. One of the
things the Bible states explicitely is that nakedness
is a curse on a nation. It says that the presence of
nakedness itself is a curse, but it also says that
nakedness is EVIDENCE of a curse. So biblically,
what is nakedness? Find out and think about it. 8o)

Initially, I said that I am visually stimulated, but
discipline takes care of that (except I don't bother
trying with my husband). Why can men not use a
little discipline also? Why is it always the woman's
    responsibility? Get a grip, guys.

Interesting topic. I think Aaron and Head Covered Lady covered it for me. I will say this:Men, cover yoursleves up, PLEASE. We don't wear shorts at church, but since it's getting warmer the guys at school are wearing their shorts, and YUCK! I just want to cringe!
Isaiah 43:2-3; dosn't that descibe what is considered naked? The thigh? Wouldn't that end at the knee?
Hmm, it will be interesting to see how this discussion goes.
Abiya, what's a firemans's claender? Never heard of that.

I'm amazed. I truly am! I started this thread as a partial spoof. Kate and Saggy caught that right away I think...

OK, you folks who object to shorts on men, not to mention bare chests, please consider the entire South Pacific, Australia, and Southeast Asia off limits where any of your travels are concerned. I'm afraid you would not be able to enjoy it at all -- you would be much too offended. I'd be really careful about Africa, Central America, and a few other places as well.

    Abiyah,
I agree with you that nakedness is a curse. Isaiah 47:1-3, "Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans. For you shall no longer be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind meal. REMOVE YOUR VEIL, STRIP OFF YOUR SKIRT, UNCOVER THE LEG, cross the rivers, your NAKEDNESS WILL BE UNCOVERED, your shame will be exposed, I will take vengence, and will not spare a man."

I agree with you as well that women are at times attracted to the way a man looks. But, the admonitions in the Bible about this are always to the men. I have not found any towards the woman. I am very interested if there are.

And I noticed in 1 Tinothy 2:8 there is an admonition to men it says,"Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension."
And then in verse nine it says to the women, "LIKEWISE, I WANT WOMEN TO ADORN THEMSELVES WITH PROPER CLOTHING...."

Women like attention from men and men like to look at women. I personally believe that is why the admonition is given to women to clothe themselves with modest apparel.

I know that it's not a scriptual thing to have a man in a suit and tie but I sure like it when my hubby has a nice suit on. He looks handsome!! So, then who cares if he stinks lolol.
