I don't hunt, but I don't oppose hunting, although I'm ambivalent about pure trophy hunting and I don't like "canned hunts."

My first hunting experience in the field occurred when I was about two or three years old. My dad took me quail hunting.

The dogs pointed a covey and I watched while dad flushed the birds and shot. Then he sat me under a tree and told me to stay there until he got back and he went into the swamp and hunted the single birds. When he got back I was right there still sitting under the tree, waiting on him.

I've been a Quail hunter ever since.

I don't hunt but I don't oppose hunting...if it is done for reasons other than collecting a trophy or an animal head to put on the wall. but you didn't expect my answer.

I think using dogs to chase out birds though is cheating. But what do I know? I'm not in the conservative popular people crowd on the BB.

There's a park in Worcester, Massachusetts where I used to mountain bike a lot. There was a Red tailed Hawk that followed me around, but never swooped me. I finally figured out, one day, that he would chase the squirrels, chipmunks, & other birds that ran away when I scared them out, with my bike. So it appears the hawk was doing the same thing. Is he cheating ? (Tongue in cheek, not a personal attack)

heading to Meeker, Colorado in 2 months. Pretty much my normal routine with my father for the last 20 years...great Father/Son time. Just the two guys out in God's great creation working our tails off to find deer and elk. I've always kind of seen it as the American way. However, I know I come from a different type of family...I was given my first firearm at the age of 9...and shortly after was in the feild for quail and dove. Since then it has grow from quail and dove to pheasant, turkey, wild hogs, wild sheep, deer(mulies & whitetail), bear (black), elk (Roosevelts & Rocky Mountain), and hopefully some others in the future. My boy is only 2 now but he will be out there with me soon...I can't wait!

Most people who hunt with dogs spend more time training and working with the dogs than hunting. Hunting is like the test to see how well a hunter has done with his dogs.

The killing part is usually the easiest comparatively and maybe only rewarding in the fact that it proves the dogs and their training.

Never been hunting in my life, although I love to fish whenever I get the chance. I guess some people might consider that hunting.

My dad was raised on the mean streets of east Dallas and his died dad at an early age, so he never really was introduced to hunting, although he had been several times with my mother's dad when they were dating and first married. Of course, that grandpa died pretty early too, so hunting was just something that didn't take hold in my family.

We've always been fishermen, and dad probably has $10,000 worth of equipment he's collected throughout the years, not including the boat.

I love to eat fish, hog, quail, deer, and pretty much anything else that was once alive. :D I love it when friends go hunting and bring some of the meat over to my house.

Deer sausage is one of the best things you can put in your mouth.

Good point. The term "hunting" carrles with it some subjectivity. Technically, fishing is a form of hunting. While I find, say, deer hunting repulsive, I've fished many times. I have no authority to condemn anyone if they chose to hunt game. Where is the objectivity of me telling someone hunting is immoral, while I have two kids invilved in 4H, whi raise their animals, and then slaughter them (not themselves, they pay someone to do it).
Having had deer sausage, I would suggest it is the second best thing, right behind the breath mint [IMG]

What do you say we call off hunting for, say, 3 seasons. By the end of the second - after you've peeled the 4th or 5th deer off the grill of your Buick - you'll ask me and my friends to hurry to the nearest patch of woods.

Deer in the absence of wolves have three main population control methods:

    1. Starvation.
    2. Cars.
    3. Hunting.

Well, plus you get to eat the bird. [IMG]

Hunted for years. In fact, years ago around this area, the only excuse for missing school was, illness, opening day for the Reds baseball season, or the first day of rabbit season. Use to have written permission from many of the farmers in the county to hunt their land. Why dont I hunt anymore? Because all the many acres I use to hunt are now subdivisions. Sad.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition almost starved because of a lack of huntable animals. These days most rural and suburban areas are over run with deer and other critters.

Skin and clean the muskrat, remove fat, scent glands and white tissue inside each leg. Soak muskrat overnight in a weak brine solution of 1 Tbsp salt to 1 qt (Imperial qt = 5 cups) water. Drain, disjoint and cut up. Put flour, salt & paprika in a paper bag. Add muskrat pieces and shake until each piece is well coated. Seminole Squirrel Stew

    2 Squirrels, cleaned
    1 c All-purpose flour
    2 c Water

Cut squirrels into serving pieces. Mix salt, pepper and flour and dredge the squirrel pieces in the mixture. In a large skillet, heat the fat and fry squirrel pieces, turning occasionally until golden brown. Remove squirrel from the skillet and set aside. Pour off all fat except about 3 tablespoons.
