I was told something the other day by a good christian friend of mine that I find very hard to believe. It seems that there was this young christian who was interested in attending Hyles Anderson College and applied for admission. Because this person is the product of a mixed race marriage he was refused admission. This rejection had a damaging effect upon this person's christian walk.

Is this for real? Are there really baptist schools that teach this?

I find this hard to believe. Probably one of those apocryphal stories like Bob Jones U having pink and blue sidewalks. I know those of mixed races attending Christian colleges that would make Hyles-Anderson look like Berkely.

I would say it's possible. Like it or not, there are still Baptists who hold beliefs such as those in question. I know because the subject has come up with a pastor I know and he stated that he didn't believe God approved of mixed race marriages. He said it wasn't biblical. This came as quite a shock to me because we have several mixed race couples in our church. I guess it's tolerated and not openly condemned, but not 100% approved of.

I attended HAC in the early 80's. At that time the school did not discriminate on the basis of race. I would be very surprised if that policy changed.

They may not condone inter-racial marriage (I'm not saying they do or do not) but that would have nothing at all to do with the "product" of such marriages.

They pick up hundreds of such children weekly on their bus routes. If one of these grew up and wanted to attend HAC, I'm sure they would be allowed to.

I mis-spoke. The man who was attempting to enter Hyles Anderson was not a product of a mixed raced marriage. He was married to a woman outside of his race. He said they would not allow him to attend the college because of who he was married to. Sorry for the confusion, but I still do not understand this policy (if it is their policy).

"Dr." Jeff Owens, until recently the president of HAC, openly opposes interracial marriage (and says so in his "sermon" titled "A Young Fundamentalist").

    Thank you Ransom
I am white and have been married to a wonderful Mexican woman for 30 years. I don't guess I will be applying to Hyles Anderson. [IMG]

I find this to be a sad state of affairs in today's IFB churches. It seem that the biblical concept of loving and reaching out to others has been replaced by racism and bigotry masquerding as christianity. This, unfortunately, is too often one of the characteristics of hyper-fundamentalism. [IMG]

I have attended IFB churches all my life and am a product of a so-called mixed marriage. No church I've attended has ever discriminated against me or my parents.

I find it sad that you would make such a mean spirited blanket statement against IFB churches in general. On top of that, you implied that all IFB churches are hyper-fundamental which to me means blowing up abortion clinics and aryanism. That does not describe IFB churches.

I attended Bob Jones University which is not IFB and they did not allow inter-racial dating either. As far as I know, they would accept someone currently in a mixed marriage as a student.

Inter-racial marriage is okay at HAC as long as it is a white/spanish marriage and not white/black.

First thing, plesase spell my name correctly, all you have to do is look at my post.

Second, I was not making a "mean-spirited" statement. I also attend a IFB church. Don't be so quick to judge the feelings behind what I say, just take it at face value, please.

Regardless of what type of church, it is WRONG to exclude one because of who they are married to.

There may be some schools out there that support this kind of nonsense, but I doubt very seriously if HAC is one of them. I'm not a big Hyles fan, but I, from having been on campuse numerous times, and having had friends attend and graduate from there, know this hasn't been their practice in the past.
