Grant, it is not this issue alone that makes me come to my conclusion. But it is a very strong one.

So back to my question. How do you feel about how this issue was handled ?

Don't you think that a priest that is involved in molesting children would fall over dead if he came into contact with real the body and blood of Christ.

Catholics must think that a terrible sin as harming children under his care would disqualify
the sacraments that such priest administer unless Christ also benifits from the sinful priest's
    pleasure...

Hmmm. Judas kissed Jesus and didn't fall over dead. That was a pretty horrible sin that he did I would think, betraying the Son of God. Perhaps your ways are not God's ways.

This heresy was rejected well over 1000 years ago. Any priest who has committed grave sin, unrepentantly, will certainly receive the just judgement of the Lord. However, that does not mean that God would wish his faithful children to be denied the precious gift of His Body and Blood when they are unaware that the priest has even done such a thing. And this is fitting, because it is not the priest who does anything, but God working through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, by virtue of the his priestly office, and not the man himself, as great a sinner as he may be. Thank God for that!

I really believe that most Roman Catholics feel that the body & blood of Jesus had mystical powers, among which is the power to save.

I believe that it was ONLY the act of sacraficial death and ultimate ressurection which HAS the power to save.

Jesus' blood was ONLY human blood and possessed no mystical powers; therefore, there is no need for the wine to become blood nor the bread to become flesh.

Ah, the old flesh is worthless, John 6:63 arguement. You speak in ignorance of the atonement A_Christian. Posts like yourse only convince me that Protestants are very limited in their spiritual growth. The human is not separated from the divine in the case of Jesus. God cannot be divided and Jesus was resurrected in his glorified human body. He had no problem with asking Thomas to touch him. He ate and drank after his resurrection. His bodily resurrection is our hope of the resurrection of our bodies at the end of time.

    Blessings

Jesus wasn't born with a glorified human body. He
assumed it for demonstration on the Mount of Transfiguration for a short time (this is when HE
exhibited the KINGDOM), and then later when He resurrected Christ was seen in HIS permanent glorified body.

GOD emptied HIMSELF to assume human form and was born through a righteous woman who was NOT SINLESS
(just as Abraham was righteous and yet sinned).
Jesus was born without sin and remained without sin, yet Jesus grew tired, He knew pain, He cried.
Had Mary been perfect, Jesus could not have been truly human.

Perhaps spiritual growth is more about how GOD deals with your understanding and less about accepting what someone else tells you.

Christ didn't say "This needs to be My Body, this needs to be My Blood." Obviously there is no need, in the sense that God is compelled, for the wine to become blood or the bread to become flesh. That's not the point. The point is that Christ chose to renew the covenant, and to impart grace and life, in this manner. Catholics accept this choice made by Christ, and don't try to out-reason His ways.

By accepting the Scriptures at face value? That's pretty funny! [IMG]

Perhaps you don't know me very well. I am hardly the zombie you make me out to be. You know what I have found with regard to Catholic oral tradition, we are far more free to grow in understanding than you that are limited to your one dimensional bible verses. Catholic theology allows for spiritual senses of scripture that allow me to grow continuously throughout my life. Oral tradition is to theological understanding as the ten commandments are to moral theology. It FREES us from the bondage of false interprutatoins. You guys put God's truth as secondary to indivdual interprutation. Doesn't matter the truth God was trying to convey. He wants us to figure it all out for ourselves individually you say.

    Blessings

    Thessalonian --

That is one very very sad site. One wonders how non-Catholics seem to have kept this so quiet in reagards to journalists, while the Catholic sins are trumpeted from the rooftops. Perhaps the liberals in journalism HATE the Catholic moral stance against abortion, divorce, homosexuality and other sins they so love and defend.

I am just terribly saddened reading all that. One wonders what it will take to get holiness back in our country. When even priests and ministers are falling prey to the "disordered passions" of the flesh, and in such large numbers, something is desparately wrong.

You know, I am tempted to think that TV advertizing and programs have a lot to do with this. Advertizers spend a lot of money with TV because they know it influences our minds. Well, can't that influence also be corrupting our stand for morality and make us do things we know deep inside we should not be doing?

And yes, Brother Curtis was gloating. He has been gloating in several posts regarding evil popes. I still don't quite know what is going on with him. This is exceedingly unlike him. I think I'll start praying my Rosary for him. Perhaps he is, despite his protestations, thinking about the Church he left and wondering if he should return. Seems his posts are an attempt to build a wall high enough that he can't jump over it and back into the Barque of St. Peter.

Some have implied that this is not such a present issue since the abuse was years ago.

How much abuse took place in the last 20 years?

How much cover-up took place in the last 20 years?

How much (of both) is continuing today?

And one last question - I am (obviously) a non catholic but my ministry is "clouded" by a general LACK OF TRUST and confidence in the church and in the clergy because of both the abuse and the cover-up.

    How can THAT be undone?

Is it not God who judges?

Romans 2:1-2, "Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things."

    Dr. Bob:
All people need to be careful of who they put their trust in whether that is a Catholic pastor or a Baptist pastor. This is prudence. One of the best ways to undo a lack of trust in your ministry is prayer, and don’t assume it is all the Catholic’s fault if people continue to have a general lack of trust. I believe most people know the problem is not limited to the Catholic Church in spite of the media attention.

As far as undoing this lack of trust and confidence in your ministry, I would say it is the same for Catholics and Baptists, the answer is housecleaning (civil authorities) and prayer. Jesus Christ is the one who makes all things new, and can undo the damage.

    God Bless

What surprised me most about the whole American RCC abuse scandal was that years before it broke appropriate internal housecleaning measures had been adopted by the Dutch RCC.

Not sure what the implications of this fact are.

Include teachers on that list! Churches are a great place for molesters to come and have opportunity to ply their wickedness among unsuspecting and needy people. Who would turn down Sunday School help from someone who appears willing to help?

What is your church doing to make sure that this scandal doesn't happen in your church?

Programs like "KidSafe" and many others that require background checks, open to viewing classrooms and more than one teacher per class (with a hall monitor) are one way to limit the chances that this problem could happen in a church you attend.
