Does anyone have any sugestions for a song I could do for Sunday service? Our choir has asked me to pick a song to sing solo, but I'm not sure WHICH one. I've never been asked to choose my own song before. I'd like to do something opposite of the type of music typically played in this church, that is, I'd like something which is not CCM, no cresendo's, maybe even try to get away from tracks if I can. If it is a modern praise song, I'd like something that has a classic feel to it. Now, if there is a classical music piece I could learn, even better. I like a minimalist sound, too. Forte is my...um, forte. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Never been asked to pick your own song before?

That seems rather odd...but good luck finding the right song.

Do you have a repertoire to choose from? I keep all my stuff in a common location so that I can go there and peruse what I have when I need to sing something.

You mentioned not wanting to use a track, and wanting to kinda do your own thing, thats why I suggested a spiritual done a cappella. You have the freedom to make it your own. My personal favorite is "Poor Wayfarin' Stranger".

These arent spirituals, but they are songs I like that are probably along your tastes:

    Til the Storm Passes By
    Down From His Glory
His Eye is on the Sparrow
Part the Waters/I Need Thee Every Hour

I founf a track that only uses bells, which sounds quite "clean", so I may go with that. They didn't have "Where We Never Grow Old", though, one of my all time favorites. Still looking for ideas, I've got a couple of weeks.

one of my favorites: "Rushing Wind" by Keith Green.

Challenging to sing, but a great call to worship.

    Hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzB-iblol0A

If your pianist plays it as written, it's tough. But it can be simplified if needed. Keith Green had some big hands...it's a challenge for me to play all the notes when I play/sing this.

Unfortunately, I can't get youtube on this computer. Ours is very old.
I'd like to do a cappella, after all, that's how I practice, but this church is all modern..powerpoint, tracks, etc. I'm trying to find something in stark contrast, maybe even a medival hymn if I can find one. After all, people have been writing hymns before this country even existed. Honestly, I think people forget sometimes! (and, yes, I WOULD like to get "medival" on them!)

    hmmm...a-cappella.com looks interesting..

Why not try something like Simple Gifts? That has always been one of my favorites.

This thread reminds me of a situation an old pastor of mine used to talk about all the time...

Wife: "What would you like for supper tonight, honey?"

    Husband: "How about meatloaf?"

    Wife: "No, I don't so."

    Husband: "How about hamburgers?"

Wife: "No, not tonight, anything else you want?"

Husband: "Why don't you just fix whatever it is you want."

The service should have some bearing on what you choose. Do you know what the subject of the preacher's sermon will be? What hymns will be sung? Will there be any sort of special emphasis (e. g., baptism, Lord's Supper, baby dedication, missions, etc.)?

All good ideas! Really, there are just so many to choose from, and it is, after all, a woman's perogative to change her mind. Timsings, I have no idea what the Pastor is going to preach on until he gets to the podium. That's a great idea, to ask him beforehand, to maybe find something with a similar message. I'm just tired of the comtemporary stuff, and reaching for those insane high notes each and every time. Last week, I hit that high G three times, full force. Ouch! I get just as much from a simple spiritual like "Let Us Break Bread Together (on our knees)", than I do from anything else.

What about "A Mighty Fortress is our God" if you want a midival style? You could do it with simple chords or without music. I also like "O God Our Help In Ages Past. The tune is simple and the words clear.

Hey! Now those are what I'm thinking of! I haven't sung those in years, and I sure do miss them. I also found a site with Lutheran hymns, although many are in German or Latin, which obviously won't work.
Thanks to everyone for some great ideas!
