And why shouldn't there be tensions between grace and works?

    Grace excludes works.

    Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

    Romans 11:6
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

    What is the tension?

    1. But then Eph. 2:10 says that we are saved unto good works, which God has prepared for us to walk in.

    2. We are not saved by good works, but we are saved unto them, which we exhibit in the procession of sanctification to become more like Christ. But it is Christ living in us to accomplish these good works through His Spirit; while at the same time, we have a responsibility.

    Exactly right.

    Ephesians 4:23-32
    23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

These are all things that we ought to do. But we have to recognize that we may not do them. We can grieve the Holy Spirit. We can give place to the devil. We have to put on the new man, and thats work. God gives us everything we need to accomplish it, but He requires us to do it by faith. Faith in Him giving us the power to overcome sin. When we walk by sight, we fail.

We are justifiend and sanctified by the Righteousness of Christ, which covers the period of our Justification and Sanctification, culminating in our glorification (2 Cor 5:21; Phil 3:9-11).

I believe we are saved by Grace alone. (Blood)

I believe, once saved, we are rewarded for practical righteousness wrought by Grace plus works. (Blood and water)

Christ gets ultimate credit for all our rewards, but we share in that glory.

    Romans 8:16-18
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

I think you worded it pretty well, although I disagree with the water parallel (trivial point). The problem is that some people present it as though we can add to Christ's imputed righteousness with our works. Good works - even if you call them "righteous works" - do not make us more righteous. The OP poses a meaningless question.

Do a study on Blood and Water and you will see that the type runs clearly and consistently throughout both testaments. Not trivial at all.
