This is kind of a wishful thinking thread. I posted one like this last election cycle and it worked out pretty good. Anyway, if you were elected POTUS in 2008 what are five things you would do or change and why. There will be no tests at the end. Just have fun. :)

There is no way I can name just five...

    1. End the mission in Iraq.
    2. Stop nation building in Afghanistan.
    3. Close the IRS and federal Dept. of Education.
    4. Through executive order put an end to some people's dreams of gay marriage.
    5. Through executive order end all abortions by declaring abortion to be covered by the current laws against murder.
    6. Bring all troops home from Europe, Korea, etc.
    7. End the funding of other nations.
    8. Pull out of the UN.
    9. Increase defense spending.
    10. Secure the borders.
    11. Crack down on illegal immigrants and those who hire them.
    12. End government give away programs. Government should not be charity.
    13. For fun I would post the Ten Commandments in the Oval Office (just to make the ACLU angry).
    14. Veto all wastful spending.
    15. Return to the Constitution.

I would do all of the above and more. In direct answer to your question, those in bold are the five things I would do.

That's cool Martin there's no limit on the number of things you would do or change. I'm confused about one thing though. If you did 1, 2, 6 and 8 why would you have to increase defense spending? Seems like you could just use the savings gained by closing down our worldwide military empire to bolster national defense.

    1. End the action in Iraq
    2. Intensify the hunt for Osama Bin Laden
    3. Ask Congress to repeal the USA PATRIOT Act
    4. Work with Congress to pass Universal Healthcare
    5. Ask Congress to levy punitive taxes on corporation who export American jobs
    6. Nominate sound, mainstream jurists to the courts rather than idealogues
    7. Do my best to engender bi-partisan progress
    8. Give full support for the formation of a Palestinian State to live in peace with Israel.
    9. Get the Equal Rights Amendment reintroduced
    10. Abolish the Office of Community & Faith-Based Initiatives as an unconstitutional function
    11. Introduce a rational immigration reform package, respecting both the need for secure borders and the contribution made by foreign labor
    12. Move toward federal funding of elections
    13. Limit the role of corporate lobbyists
    14. Pass sensible bankruptcy law NOT drafted by the banking industry
    15. Institute fair taxation so that the rich pay their fair share
    16. Establish an energy policy to reduce the use of fossil fuels by development of new technologies and promoting nuclear, hydro, wind, and solar power.
    17. Immediately stop all warrantless spying on American citizens
    18. Work to mend fences with allies and reach out to potential adversaries
    19. Given that an educated nation is a strong nation, I would institute a program to pay for higher education for deserving students
    20. A chicken in every pot! (OK, that one is not original with me) haha

This is a great list, MP. I would only add two items.

    21. I would drastically increase pay for public school teachers in order to raise standards for teachers. We could be more picky about who we hire.

    22. I would legalize most now-illegal drugs so we could require dealers to be licensed, quality to be standardized, and product to taxed.

Secure the borders and strictly enforce immigration laws.
    Repair Social Security and Medicare.
Stop the war in Iraq and put resources where terrorism actually exists.
Repeal all laws that encourage businesses to go overseas with middle class jobs, create laws to encourage them to stay here, and put heavy penalties for moving overseas.
Made an honest effort to end abortion and gay marriage/civil unions.
    Make tax cuts permanent.
Modify the Patriot Act to protect civil liberties. Life sentences for those in power found abusing the law on American citizens.
Find another form of correction for those addicted to drugs than incarceration.
The death penalty for those manufacturing meth or other drugs that can be linked to the death of a child. The death penalty for those selling drugs to children.
Use the federal government to encourage lowering of costs in the medical industry, and subsidizing those who cannot afford a premium for private insurance. Absolutely no government takeover of the health industry.

And most important, ban all soap operas.

Are you wanting things POTUS could actually do or things that would be on his/her agenda?

I'd call a Constitutional Convention to scrap the Constitution and form 50 sovereign nations.

If I were elected POTUS, I would:

    1. Ask everyone in sight, "How in the world did I get elected President when I wasn't even running??"
    2. Demand a recount
    3. Demand another recount
    4. Eat chocolate until I calmed down
    5. Write my resignation speech

    1. Take over Canada ... (then could honestly claim Canadian talent as American)
    2. Stop any American being involved in the affairs of other countries .. (Save heaps of American lives and dollars, and make most wars and conflicts shorter for everyone)
    3. Ban the export of any American made film or TV series. (may not do much for the US, but would be great for other countries ;-))
4.Cancel the declaration of independence. (would create a whole heap of problems for the British;-) )
    5. Make all who wish to play football use a round ball, and kick it. (mainly to help with world understanding and see how the rest of the world lives)

    Regards
    Bob

ps. Guess why America doesn't allow Australians to vote in their election :laugh::laugh:
